10 Ways To Fight Yeast Infection

It is irritating, it is painful, and unfortunately it is very common. Yeast infection can happen when something—could be the use of antibiotics, could be diabetes, an infection, or even pregnancy— changes the typical balance of the vaginal microflora. That’s kind of a quaint term for the microorganisms that naturally exist in your vagina.


Yeast fungus is just one of these, and if you’ve got too much growing thanks to that disturbance, you’ll notice the symptoms. However, please do go to your doctor if the usual remedies, including some tips we provide here, don’t make the infection clear up within a week.

Here are 5 things you can consume to avoid and cure yeast infection -

Change your diet a little

Or a lot, depending on how much the proportion of sugars and grains in your regular food intake are—these are known to aggravate the condition considerably.

Drink a lot of water

We suggest at least eight glasses a day. The water will help cleanse your body by flushing out a bunch of toxins, and anyway you probably weren’t drinking enough water if you have yeast infection.

Try a home remedy

Drink a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in water, about two to three teaspoons in six ounces of water three times a day. Try it for a week; it’s a time-tested and effective booster to cure the infection.

Drink cranberry juice

This is another good home remedy, and it’s also great for urinary infections. A word of caution: don’t bother getting sweetened cranberry juice, because that’s just counterproductive.

Eating yogurt helps

Plain yogurt is wonderful in case of yeast infections— eat some everyday, and you can even use some topically to soothe the area. And again, don’t use flavored or sweetened yogurt!

Aren’t there pills to help with a yeast infection? Well, of course you have some; the pharmaceutical industry has it covered. There are anti-fungal medications you can get a prescription for, and they start working pretty fast, so you won’t have to experience the frustration and pain of the infection for a long time.

Over the counter medication

There are over the counter ointments and creams galore, like the ever-popular Monistat. If you’re not better within forty-eight hours, you know it’s time to see the doctor.

Probiotics vs. antibiotics

If you’re already on antibiotics and that’s why you have the infection, you can’t really stop taking the antibiotics. They kill the bacteria that might otherwise stave off the increased yeast growth, so what you can do is take something to restore the growth of those good bacteria. See if someone can get you hooked up with some probiotics—they’re as nice as they sound, and they’ll help clear up the infection.

Clothes and personal hygiene

Yeast really likes moist, warm places, which is why they really like the genitals. Put a little extra effort into staying as dry as possible. This could mean avoiding extremely tight pants, leggings, jeans and opting for plain cotton underwear. You don’t want the temperature of your crotch to be higher than it needs to be, so keeping away from pantyhose and nylons and any other synthetic fabrics is a great idea.

And another thing you should be doing anyway— change your tampons or pads very frequently; maybe even more frequently than you already do. Definitely change them every four to five hours. And change your underwear regularly, too, while you’re at it.

Gym clothes and swimwear are another issue, because whether it’s sweat or pool water, it’s moisture, and as we’ve established, that’s no good. These types of gear are also excellent heat traps, so get out of them as fast as possible after your workout or swim. Try to change into something made of pure cotton or silk, or even linen, as these are far more breathable fabrics.

Avoid scented products

This is a bit of a no-brainer, but while you have an infection also avoid using scented cosmetics or other products near your genitals. Shampoos and soaps, scented tampons and the like are out.

Wipe front to back

It’s not fun, but your anatomy is arranged so that the distance from your anus to your vagina is really very small, and you don’t want to make the infection worse by introducing more unwanted bacterial growth.


Yeast infections can be a recurring problem, but once you’ve worked out what combination of remedies works for you, you know what to do the next time you have it. Oh, and it’s also helpful to cut down on sex, because that tends to transmit infections from one partner to another, or make your own infection worse. It’s terrible, but that’s what you have to do. In the extra time, get more sleep— lack of sleep and stress can also make your experience of a yeast infection worse.
