30 Surprisingly Strange and Unusual Phobias

Updated on July 6, 2013

Phobias: What do we really fear?

The word Phobia comes from a Greek word "Phobos" which means "Fear". This is a type of anxiety disorder defined as persistent fear of an object or situation. People who have phobias suffer a great length in avoiding these situations and things and are really extremely afraid of it.

We might find some phobias really crazy or funny but these are serious things for people who might happen to have that certain phobia.

Phobias vary on people. There are things that only you are afraid of but others may see it as a simple thing.

For example, I have Eleutherophobia, that is, fear of freedom. I've searched throughout the net and find that this phobia is really strange and rare to people. Who doesn't want freedom anyway?

I have listed here 30 Phobias that I find surprisingly rare and unusual; that you don't think people are suffering from these kinds of phobias.

Fear of beautiful women

Fear of flowers

Fear of falling in love

Fear of trees

Fear of clothes

  1. Pantophobia – Fear of everything

  2. Philophobia – Fear of falling in love or being in love

  3. Bibliophobia - Fear of books

  4. Cacophobia - Fear of ugliness (i know some!)

  5. Styrophobia - Fear of Styrofoams

  6. Alektorophobia – Fear of chickens or other feathered creatures or flying animals.

  7. Koumpounophobia – Fear of buttons

  8. Estiophobia – Fear of clothes

  9. Eleutherophobia – Fear of freedom

  10. Euphobia – Fear of hearing good news (how bad can it be?)

  11. Gnosiophobia – Fear of knowledge

  12. Kathisophobia – Fear of sitting down

  13. Dendrophobia – Fear of trees

  14. Metrophobia – Fear or hatred of poetry

  15. Nomatophobia – Fear of names

  16. Optophobia – Fear of opening one's eyes

  17. Papyrophobia – Fear of paper

  18. Plutophobia – Fear of wealth (wow, can i just have your wealth?)

  19. Venustraphobia – Fear of beautiful women

  20. Koniophobia – Fear of dust

  21. Anthrophobia – Fear of flowers

  22. Barophobia – Fear of gravity

  23. Chrematophobia – Fear of money (really? seriously?)

  24. Dipsophobia – Fear of drinking

  25. Graphophobia – Fear of writing or handwriting

  26. Ambulophobia – Fear of walking

  27. Ereuthrophobia – Fear of blushing

  28. Hypertrichophobia – Fear of hair

  29. Ancraophobia – Fear of wind

  30. Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia – Fear of long words

These are only the few of the hundred types of phobias lurking around in the dark. There are hundreds of phobias because every man has its unique perspective and outlook towards everything and may develop fear out of it.

People who knew someone who has phobia should be aware of his own actions and avoid doing things that could trigger someone's fear.

The main cause of these phobias is a traumatic event that happened way back and we developed this fear. It may not easy to overcome and some people have to go under treatment or therapy.

When we were still young, my younger sister used to scare me with chickens to get what she wants.

I really don’t know where and what started this fear but it can really cause me fever when exposed too much!

If she's mad, she would get the chickens and would run after me. I would scream until the end of the street, running as fast as I could while screaming, the heart palpitating above normal. Then she would laugh.

It was really a messy childish thing to do but it works for her. She doesn’t do it when our mom's around, afraid of being scolded.

Now that we're old enough, she outgrew those little 'blackmails' on me... but sad to say, I'm still stuck with that phobia.

Who wouldn't be afraid of words as long as hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia? How about let's shorten it to hippoliophobia? I'm curious about your fear of freedom. What are some things you might avoid doing because of that fear?

An engaging hub! Phobias are common. It can either be innate or genetic. I have phobia of ghosts & devils as well as darkness, which is quite common. My family-members are very scared of lizards - this phobia is common in my country. I heard that one relative is scared of Barbie dolls! Hence I understand your phobia.

Thanks for SHARING. Useful & Interesting. Voted up

I'm sorry about your phobia! It isn't funny to the sufferer. It's kind of ironic that the word for "fear of long words" is the longest word I've ever seen! I have a friend who has a fear of rainbows. I don't know if there's an official term for it. Her mother told her a fable when she was young that rainbows would chase her and take her away. Ever since then, she's morbidly afraid of them! Fear comes in all sizes and shapes. : ) This was very well written and interesting. Thank you!

Amazing indeed there is a phobia for just about everything! As for me, I have "Skfallophobia!" This is a fear that the sky might fall on my head.

So I wear a hat when I am outdoors. That way the sky should fall on my hat instead. So for everybody with Skyfallophobia I recommend wearing a hat when outdoors.!

      Myz -

Interesting read. I actually did a study on fears a few years back. At that time, there were over 234 types of "fear/phobias" in existence. My study was to show that the government was using fears instead of logic in the banning of exotic animals for private ownership in the state. I have a fear of HPcommentingphobea. I just am scared to death to make comments, as you can tell! : ) Great Job!

Very interesting phobias! I've never heard of any of these, I find the fear of buttons and longs words to be the strangest. I used to suffer from Agoraphobia back in highschool.
