5 Natural Remedies for Acidity

Updated on September 9, 2015

One of my friends was recently suffering from acidity. As a person who first looks towards more natural and home remedies than tablets or syrups, I got onto the internet and searched for a few home remedies that I could recommend to him. After going through a few of them and having already tried a few remedies on various occasions, I found it right to put down some of my favourite home remedies here. So, here are 5 natural remedies you may want to try for your acidity and heart burn.

Baking soda

You may have already seen a number of antacid brands available over the counter in your nearest medical store, which you can buy, dissolve in water and drink it. These may also be available in various flavours. But did you know that, the base chemical of these products is sodium bicarbonate, also popularly called ‘baking soda’? So, if you are witnessing acidity, maybe the first thing you can do instead of running to the medical store is to run to the kitchen, take 0.5-1 tsp of baking soda, mix it in a glass of water and drink it.

Mint juice

Many people may not be aware of this remedy for acidity. This is a very simple yet an effective remedy for acidity. All you need to do is obtain fresh mint leaves and grind them to extract the juice. You can either drink this juice directly or mix it with a glass of cold water and drink it. Mint has digestive and cooling properties, which help in digesting food as well as cure the burning sensation in the stomach.

Cucumber

Cucumber has several health benefits. It is full of water and it is one of the best detoxifying vegetables. Another important property of this wonderful vegetable is its cooling property, which is very good for people suffering from acidity. Simply take a cucumber, grate it and extract a cup of juice and drink it. It is as simple as that. You can also eat slices of fresh cucumber after eating any fried food. This helps clean excess oil and reduce the occurrence of acidity.

Cumin seed concoction

I have tried this personally once, and I find the taste very interesting. While some may call it disgusting, I don’t personally feel it that way. Having said that, it is one of the best natural medicines to relieve your acidity. It helps in stimulating the production of saliva, which helps in digesting food and improve metabolism. It also helps in healing ulcers that are formed due to acid secretion.

The procedure for preparing this concoction is very simple. Just take a teaspoon of cumin seeds and boil them in a glass of water. Allow this concoction to cool down and drink it. You can also chew a teaspoon of raw cumin seeds accompanied with a cup of water.

End with a yogurt

How can we forget the tasty and loveable yogurt? Yogurt is known to be a good coolant and has several good bacteria that help in food digestion. Having a few teaspoons of plain yogurt every day after a meal can help in preventing acidity which is caused by the release of digestive acids in the stomach.

Following these simple natural remedies can help in alleviating acidity. If after these remedies, acidity still persists, visiting the nearest physician should be the next step.
