A Different Method to Relax

Updated on February 23, 2012

Music as a relaxation therapy

Is it hard for you to relax after a long and tiring day? Do you have problems sleeping or concentrating? I guess I know the answer for you! It is very simple - Music. For centuries music is listened as a way to entertain people: concerts, parties etc. but this time I am going to show you the other side of it, its sensitive and relaxing side.
We all have heard of the chillout genre but many of us are sceptical about it because it is not the kind of music we will listen at a party or in the bus. Yes, that is true, but what we don't know
is that this kind of music is scientifically proven as reducing stress, high-blood pressure and promoting sleep.

How did the "chillout" begin?

Here is a little more information regarding this "slow" genre : Chillout music emerged in the early and mid-1990s in "chill rooms" at dance clubs, where relaxing music was played to allow dancers a chance to "chill out" from the more emphatic and fast-tempo music played on the main dance floor.
The genres associated with chill-out are mostly ambient, trip-hop, nu jazz, ambient house, New Age and other sub-genres of downtempo. Sometimes the easy listening sub-genre
lounge is considered to belong to the chill-out collection as well. Chill out as a musical genre or description is synonymous with the more recently popularized terms "smooth electronica" and "soft techno" and is a loose genre of music blurring into several other very distinct styles of electronic and lo-fi music.

Choosing the most suitable chillout sound

It is personal for everyone to find their own favorite chillout beat which can relax them the most. I personally recommend the musical project called Enigma, which is mixture of slow sensual sound, tribal chants, guitar rifts as well as Enya who has a very interesting signature sound - she uses simple arrangements with extensive multi-tracking vocals. The vocals are performed individually, and are then layered together to form a virtual choir, although all the voices are Enya herself. Of course, there are many other notable chillout artists such as Era, Delerium, Mysteria etc.

Personal Recommendation

The relaxation therapy

Pick the sound that is to your liking the most upload it to your MP3 player and follow the next few steps. Make sure it is night time, this kind of music is very spiritual and you may loose your relaxation during daytime because of
sunlight, noise or other kind of irritants. Find the most comfortable place, put on the most comfortable clothes (some people even try this relaxation method nude) and lay down. Start listening to the songs and do not try to skip any because you will get distracted or even annoyed. Follow the beat
and while taking deep breaths, close your eyes, raise your arms in the air and start "drawing" (without thinking about it) different figures in the air. Do not think of what you are doing just "paint" circles, dots, your signature, it does not matter just keep up to the chillout sound. Imagine how you run
away from everything and everyone, do not focus on anything just let your thoughts flow. Once your arms feel tired enough just put them down and simply leave yourself to the slow and beautiful music. This method can also be used as a mood enhancer.

How does this method work?.

You are probably wondering how does this work. Well, our bodies like to “sync” to the external rhythms which means that if we listen to slower music our heart rate will decrease and we will become more relaxed.
