A Guide to Effects of Insomnia

Inability to get adequate amount of sleep is referred to as insomnia, and people suffering from it do not feel refreshed after waking up in the morning.  Insomnia affects millions of people all over the world, and is caused by many different conditions, circumstances or diseases.   The amount of required sleep varies from person to person and age, but to function properly, most people require minimum of eight hours of sleep each day.  Without the adequate sleep, the person starts feeling unhealthy, and depending on the cause, the effects of insomnia can be short term or long term.

One of the biggest impacts of insomnia is on the personality of a person, and insomniac develops the tendency to burst over something which is very petty.  Change in the personality caused by insomnia depends on the length of disrupted sleep.  Insomnia can also lead to complications in personal relationships as no one wants to be with a person with annoying behavior and attitude.   The mind becomes sluggish, and affects the performance level at the workplace.

Another serious effect of insomnia is weakened immune system, which makes the person more prone to getting sick and catching flu bug several times a year.  Though the person may feel terrible for his or her actions and behavior, there is no much that can be controlled.   In addition to changes in the personality, insomniac also suffers from several psychological problems.  These people are more prone to infections and illnesses as lack of sleep makes the immune system weak.

In most of the cases, depression is the most common effect of insomnia, and depression can further make the condition worse.  Depression can often lead to hopelessness, and suicidal tendencies, hence it is advisable to consult the doctor.  Insomnia can also affect the appearance of a person, because due to lack of sleep, the repair and growth of the body is not sufficient, affecting the appearance and self-esteem of a person.   Over the long period, insomnia changes the life of a person, hence it is advisable to consult the doctor and explore various treatment options.

Studies indicate that lack of sleep can lower the temperature of the body making it difficult for vital functions to sustain.   Insomnia also causes high blood pressure and increased heart rate.   Chronic insomnia can affect person’s life quite severely, and people around such person tend to get irritated due to his or her annoying habits and behavior.   It is essential to find the root cause of insomnia to get the appropriate treatment.
