Calcium Linked with Dementia

According to a study carried out at Duke University, North Carolina, Calcium in dairy Products, can narrow blood vessels in the brain, causing dementia in the elderly. The study also showed that Vitamin D, which helps the body to use bone building calcium, can make it worse.

People between 60 and 80 years old who consumed most calcium and Vitamin D, were found to have more lesions, damaged brain tissue, than those with a smaller intake. age and blood presure did not affect the test results.

Lesions are often found in old people, but increased lesions can lead to a higher risk of stroke and dementia.Scientists said " They could be caused by bone-like calcium deposits, clogging blood vessels, making it harder for blood to reach the brain.

A growing number of researchers are becoming concerned about the effects of too much calcium given the emphasis on promoting high intakes.

I've always believed that taking things in excess is not good. Not only could increased Calcium intake cause stroke, given such finding from Duke University. Taking too much calcium, most especially those who take in calcium supplements beyond the recommended dosage and/or without medical advice, can also lead to the development of hypercalcemia.

Thank you very much for sharing. It's been an interesting read and I definitely learned a lot. :) Voting up and sharing! :D

It's great to hear this. The Dairy Council here in the US has been promoting more dairy and more calcium for decades. Another chalk point for "everything in moderation"...
