Cherry Juice and Black Cherry Capsules (Tablets) for Gout - One of the Best Home Remedies for Gout

Updated on January 24, 2011

If you have ever had gout, you won’t ever forget it!  The throbbing pain in your toe or other afflicted joint and the feeling of having a knife stuck in your foot is just too much to ignore!  A person will do almost anything possible to relieve or eliminate the pain from this disease.  I have had it once myself, even though I am too young to get it normally and, let me tell you, it was bad!  Gout it caused by an excess of uric acid, causing a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints.  The usual profile for those with gout is men middle-age or older who are on the heavy side, especially if they drink.  On the other hand, many of us that don’t fit that usual description can still get it and need some way of getting rid of it.

If you go to the doctor, they will often prescribe medication to eliminate some of the uric acid, and often a steroid.  If the problem persists, Allopurinol is sometimes recommended.  It is taken daily and should eliminate the gout, although there is some concern about possible long-term effects.  A lot of people do not want to take prescription medicine their whole lives, especially if the gout is preventable or treatable by natural causes.  There are a wide number of possible gout home remedies, ranging from apple cidar vinegar and black beans to tart cherries.  Some of these, like the apple cider vinegar, may not be the smartest way to treat gout, but it does work for some people.

The best home remedy for gout for most people seems to be tart cherries.  The cherries can be eaten whole, which seems to work the best, or taken as tart cherry juice or cherry capsules.  Whole cherries and cherry juice work very well, but are often very expensive, unless you can find them on sale.  Some sufferers have even been able to eat cherry pie filling and get some relief, but it is not normal – still, it wouldn’t hurt to try.  The easiest way to get the benefit of gout relief or prevention is from tart cherry capsules from concentrate.  These can be obtained online or from health food-type stores or some grocery stores.  Cherry juice concentrate can often be obtained from the same sources and works even better, but the price difference can be major at times.   I have been taking tart cherry capsules every day since I had my episode of gout just as preventative medicine, and they have been working well for me.  My doctor also recommended them when I asked, so some medical professionals recognize their value as well.  Cherries were actually the only home remedy that he recommended.

As painful as gout can be, you need something to help and cherries have done so for me.  If you have questions, it never hurts to ask your doctor, but try them out if you haven’t.  They won’t take the pain away immediately, but they will help and can help keep the gout from returning.
