Dangers of GMO's and Monsanto

Updated on February 26, 2016

Beginning of GMO's

GMO stands for Genetically Manufactured Organism whose genome has been altered by genetic engineering so that its DNA contains genes not normally found there.

This journey all started back in 1980 when the first GMO patent was issued. A court case between a genetics engineer at General Electric and the U.S. Patent Office was settled by a 5-to-4 Supreme Court ruling, allowing for the first patent on a living organism. The GMO in question was a bacterium with an appetite for crude oil, ready to gobble up spills. Two years later, the FDA approved the first GMO which was Humulin, insulin produced by genetically engineered E. coli bacteria. Some decade later, the first GMO hits grocery stores in form of 'Flavr Savr' tomato whose properties allow for a delayed ripening period, allowing it longer shelf life then the conventional tomato.

Basically, it goes down hill on a steep slope from there.

Beginning of Monsanto

Monsanto was funded in 1901 by John Francis Queeny, a thirty year pharmaceutical veteran married to Olga Mendez Monsanto, for which Monsanto Chemical Works is named. The company’s first product is chemical saccharin, sold to Coca-Cola as an artificial sweetener. Then, around 1920, the company produced an industrial wonder chemical called PCB (Polychlorinated biphenyls). This was "a group of organic compounds used in the manufacture of plastics, as lubricants, and dielectric fluids in transformers, in protective coating for wood, metal and concrete, and in adhesives, wire coating and so forth." Fifty years later, the compound was banned due to its potent carcinogens and have been implicated in reproductive, developmental and immune system disorders. That didn't stop Monsanto. In fact, they knew the extent of the dangers but hid them from the public due to high profits for the company.

Environmental Hell

Here are some of their toxic patents that have poisoned many and killed more.

1901- Saccharin: A sweet-tasting synthetic compound used in food and drink as a substitute for sugar

1920's- PCB's: Toxic compounds used in the manufacture of plastics.

1930's- First hybrid seed corn and expands into detergents, soaps, industrial cleaning products, synthetic rubbers and plastics.

1940's- Uranium: Used to later be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as an atomic bomb that killed and poisoned hundreds of thousands of people.

Mid 1940's- Continue to create and distribute pesticides containing dioxins.

1950's: Create several Disney Land attractions out of toxic non-biodegradable plastic.

1960's- Agent Orange: A herbicide containing dioxin that is blamed for long term risks of people that have come in contact with it.

WWII- Zyklon-B gas: A gas sold to Third Reich to use in gas chambers in death camps.

Shortly after the gas, they introduced Aspartame, a deadly neurotoxin. Known effects of Aspartame are mania, rage, violence, blindness, joint-pain, fatigue, weight-gain, chest-pain, coma, insomnia, numbness, depression, tinnitus, weakness, spasms, irritability, nausea, deafness, memory-loss, rashes, dizziness, headaches, seizures, anxiety, palpitations, fainting, cramps, diarrhea, panic, burning in the mouth. Diseases triggered/mimicked include diabetes, MS, lupus, epilepsy, Parkinson’s, tumors, miscarriage, infertility, fibromyalgia, infant death, Alzheimer’s. -Source: Us Food and Drug Administration.

1994- Synthetic Bovine Growth Hormone: Synthetic Hormone sold to farmers to increase milk production in cows. It was produced from a genetically modified E. coli bacteria.

1995- GMO Crops- Crops that are genetically manufactured to tolerate their toxic herbicide Roundup.

Why Monsanto continues to Poison us

If it's the products produces and sold by this company are so dangerous, why hasn't anyone put a stop to it?

Great question. The problem with huge, wealthy companies is that they can and will buy out anyone that protests their patents, even members of the establishment. In 1970's Monsanto partner, G.D. Searle, does some research and states that aspartame is safe, while the FDA’s own scientific research clearly reveals that aspartame causes tumors and massive holes in the brains of rats, before killing them. The FDA initiates a grand jury investigation into G.D. Searle for “knowingly misrepresenting findings and concealing material facts and making false statements” in regard to aspartame safety. During this time, Searle strategically taps Donald Rumsfeld to become CEO. The corporation’s primary goal is to have Rumsfeld utilize his political influence to entice the FDA to work with them. A few months later, Samuel Skinner receives “an offer he can’t refuse,” withdraws from the investigation and resigns his post at the U.S. Attorney’s Office to go work for Searle. This tactic stalls the case just long enough for the statute of limitation to run out and the grand jury investigation is abruptly and conveniently dropped.

This has happened numerous times throughout the recent history and each time, Monsanto's crimes are swept under the rug.

Disappearing Bee Population

We have seen the world's bee population decline over the years and Bee Farmers have posted photos and videos of their bellowed bees, dying off one by one. Because Monsanto's Genetically Modified crops have been engineered to ‘self-pollinate,’ they do not need nature or bees to do that for them. When bees attempt to pollinate a GM plant or flower, it gets poisoned and dies. In fact, the bee colony collapse was recognized and has been going on since Genetically Manufactured crops were first introduced.

To counter the accusations that they deliberately caused this ongoing genocide of bees, Monsanto buys out Beeologics, the largest bee research firm that was dedicated to studying the colony collapse phenomenon and whose extensive research named the monster as the primary culprit.

How we can win

Most developed countries around the world have long ago banned GMO's but here in the US, these chemicals are still poisoning us and were deemed safe by the same corporations that manufactured them. You may have seen many petitions online demanding the produce companies label their products. If you have found this information terrifying, there are steps you can take to make your voice heard. Educate yourself and make better buying options. Know what you are trying to avoid when going to the grocery store. Write letters to your state senators, your governors. Organize educational meetings even if they only consisted of close friends and family. We have to demand that they label our foods. We have the right to know what we are feeding our children.

Please look for these labels at your local grocery store.

What is safe and what is not?

Avoid this:

  • Alfalfa
  • Canola
  • Corn
  • Papaya
  • Soy
  • Sugar Beets
  • Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash

Indulge in this (while you still can)

  • Wheat
  • Potato
  • Rice
  • Chia
  • Beta Vulgaris (eg. chard)

The killer Pesticide

Roundup is in every store on every shelf. It is used by farmers to treat their GMO crops. Roundup kills the weeds but not the crops, the whole purpose for GMO crops. Roundup contains Glyphosate which is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and an Organo-Phosphorus compound, specifically a Phosphonate. An increasing number of crops have been genetically engineered to be tolerant of Glyphosate. This compound kills any plant that may be competing with the crop. In 2015, World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified Glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic (cancer causing) in humans". This product is not biodegradable and runs off into our soil and water supplies.

Make Your Own Pesticide

Soap, Orange Citrus Oil & Water

To make this natural pesticide, simply mix 3 tablespoons of liquid Organic Castile soap with 1 ounce of Orange oil to one gallon of water. Shake well. This is an especially effective treatment against slugs and can be sprayed directly on ants and roaches.
