Ectopic Pregnancy- its risk and treatments

Updated on January 2, 2018

Ectopic pregnancies are sometimes called as tubal pregnancies because almost all the ectopic pregnancies take place in the fallopian tube. It may also get attached to the cervix or to the abdominal cavity. The fertilized egg, which is in a tubal pregnancy, is not able to develop properly because the fallopian tubes are not made to hold a growing embryo. According to the research of (AAFP) American Academy of Family Physicians, the ectopic pregnancy can be seen one out of those fifty pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy cannot proceed in a normal way. This happens as the fertilized egg cannot survive and also the growing tissues can destroy diverse maternal structures.

The risk factors for ectopic pregnancy-

There are various risk factors associated with the ectopic pregnancy. It is said that an estimated number of 20 in every 1000 pregnancies are the ectopic ones.

Earlier, if you have had an ectopic pregnancy then you are likely to be detected by it again. Previous ectopic pregnancy is one of the risk factors.

Infection and inflammation- Infection is seen in the uterus and the inflammation of fallopian tube. Pelvic inflammatory disease increases the risk factors of ectopic pregnancy. And these infections are caused by Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

Structural issues- If you have a fallopian tube, which is not in a normal shape, or if the tube is damaged, mostly during the surgery, it may lead to complications. Even if you decide to reconstruct the shape of a fallopian tube, this can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Smoking- Smoking is the reason behind many health issues and it also can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. The more you smoke, the greater is the risk.

Treatment of Ectopic pregnancy-

Ectopic pregnancy issue can be treated. There are different ways in which it can be treated-

To keep you away from complications, it is necessary to remove the tissue because fertilized eggs are not able to develop or survive outside the uterus.

It can be treated with two methods one is the medication and the other one is the surgery.

Methotrexate is known as one of the common medications. This injection stops the cells from growing and thus your body will absorb them and also helps in dissolving the existing cells of ectopic mass. This may also save the fallopian tube. If the ectopic pregnancy is detected at an early stage, then normally it is treated with methotrexate.

Surgery

Most of the surgeons recommend the surgery, which is known as Laparotomy. This is generally performed under local anesthesia. A very small and flexible instrument known as the laparoscope is used to remove the ectopic pregnancy. Removing of embryo and repair or remove the internal or affected the fallopian tube. This is known as the laparotomy. If the first surgery fails, then the surgeons repeat that surgery again but this time with the larger incision.
