Everything you need to know about hemorrhoids

Updated on January 31, 2019

Overview of hemorrhoids-

If you observe swollen veins in your lower part of the rectum and anus then it is known as hemorrhoids. They are also known as piles which are similar to the varicose veins. You can either find these hemorrhoids internally or externally. Internal hemorrhoids grow inside the rectum and the anus, whereas the external ones are developed outside the anus. Hemorrhoids are considered to be the most common problem and in that external ones are the most painful ones.

Know exactly what causes the hemorrhoids-

  • Hemorrhoids generally affect people aging above 45.
  • Family history
  • Pregnancy
  • Constipation
  • Obesity
  • Anal intercourse
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Straining during the bowel movements

Symptoms of the hemorrhoids-

  • Extreme irritation and itching around your anus
  • Experiencing painful bowel movements
  • Swelling around the anus region
  • Noticing bleeding in your toilet or on the tissue during the bowel movements
  • Fecal leakage
  • Painful or itchy lump

However, one needs to remember that the symptoms usually depend on the hemorrhoids location.

Know how these hemorrhoids are diagnosed-

You will need to undergo some tests and procedures for diagnosing internal hemorrhoid. A digital examination and a visual inspection are carried out for a better understanding. In the digital examination, your doctor will insert a gloved, lubricated finger in your rectum. If they sense any unusual thing such as growth, etc they may recommend you to get an additional test done known as sigmoidoscopy.

Treatment options for hemorrhoids-

Hemorrhoids can be treated in both ways i.e. either by home remedies or by the medications.

Have a look at these easy home remedies through which you can ease the swelling, inflammation and the mild pain of hemorrhoids.

  • Eating a lot of high-fiber foods-

Eat plenty of vegetables, whole grains and fruits. This helps in softening the stools and also helps in increasing its bulk. This is useful and avoids the strains.

  • Soak it on a regular basis in a sitz bath or warm water-

Make sure that you immerse the anal area for at least 10 to 15 minutes in warm water for about two to three times per day.

  • Never use dry toilet paper-

To keep your anal area clean after the bowel movement, use wet toilet paper or the moist towels which don’t contain any alcohol and perfume mixture.

Thus with these home remedies, you can easily get rid of the hemorrhoid symptoms within a week.

If home remedies aren’t working for you, then you may switch to the option of medication.

  • If there is little discomfort then your doctor may recommend you few ointments, pads or suppositories. These products help in relieving the itchiness and the pain because they contain ingredients such as lidocaine, witch hazel, and hydrocortisone.
  • Even the doctor may suggest for getting a rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy and injection therapy.

If you are facing the hemorrhoids problem then get the recommended tests done on an immediate basis by consulting a good gastroenterologist in Bangalore. They will help you in a much better way to understand all the things related to the hemorrhoids.
