Five Minutes of Absolute Truth

A controlled mind can't run freely

observing life from the outside is not easy

meditation, prayers, chanting has been done for centuries

allowing people to step out of thinking

like King David who heard his own soul speaking

Most find this moment of truth just five minutes before sleeping

lucid dreaming

a heart yearns for a safe harbor to spend the night

and just when all conscious thinking is done and exhausted

we pull in our oars and the mind drifts and takes flight

to slumber in peace we must release and let go of control

inner monologues are turned off

our self comforting,

our reasoning, analysis,

our rehearsals shut down

this place is when we know our mind is free to go anywhere

without restrictions

it has no destination, nothing in particular

no questions or problems to solve

we enter a trust zone we must

as we say farewell to conscious mastery

we become vulnerable

in those five minutes of truth

we release the clutch

we trust will be able to see, & walk when we get up

what is it that we trust?

The unvarnished stories of our lives emerge

with character, conflicts and plots with twists

unlike the stories we share to the world

the powers we run to when something threatens our livelihood

sources of meaning are in full view

indescribable and true

these five minutes of truth

just before sleep & yet not awake

we trust in something unidentified

unspoken and it feels so safe

buried in the silence of the night

it feels as if our thoughts are drifting away

yet they linger down this corridor into a pathway

seeking that place to ease worry, unbearable complexity

lost time, altered reality, missing treasures

& the safe harbor

We arrive at God's alter, inside

where a little flame burns

whether we are religious or not

we all assign worth to something in the end

everyone's heart goes somewhere

to worship.

amen.
