Difference Between White and Brown Sugar
In reality, brown sugar is actually white sugar mixed with molasses. Generally, raw sugar is also brown in color, it forms when the juice of sugar cane evaporates. When sugar is created from sugarcane plants, they often separate and remove these molasses.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, these two varieties of sugar are similar nutritionally – white sugar contains about 16 kilocalories per teaspoon whereas brown sugar about 17 kilocalories per teaspoon.
Brown sugar contains certain minerals due to its molasses content, most notably potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron, whereas white sugar contains none of these. However, since those minerals are only present in minuscule amounts therefore there is no real health benefit to using brown sugar. Taste and the effects on baked goods are the real differences between those two.
How We Get Raw Sugars
Raw and brown sugar are both dark-colored in appearance, these two terms are often used interchangeably, which can create confusion. About 13 to 14% of each stalk of sugarcane is sugar, the other 15% is the fiber (the cellulosic material of the plant) and about 70% is water.
After sugar cane from the fields arrived at the sugar millers, they would be ground to extract its sweet sap solution. This involves a process where the shredded sugarcanes will go through an enormous ‘bath’ with hot water. The hot water will extract the sugar from the fiber, just like how hot water pulls tea out of tea-leaves.
Milk of lime is then added to the sugary juice before boiling it. This is done to remove impurities such as grit from the soil or tiny fibers from the woody stalk. These impurities will settle on the bottom and the clear sugar juice can easily be poured off the top.
But the sugar is still dissolved in the water, so the next step will be using steam to heat the sugar solution so that the water can evaporate and the raw sugar crystals will be formed. The mixture is then spin at very high speed in a perforated drum so that the liquid can be forced out of the perforations leaving the sugar crystals trapped inside.
Sugar is Almost Everywhere
Sugar is made up of two components: they are fructose and glucose. No matter where they come from, composition of sugar molecules and their molecular structure is the same. The ratios of fructose and glucose are also not far different in both table and fruit sugar. Neither type of sugar is better or worse for us, however, our body process them differently. Glucose breaks down in the stomach whereas fructose breaks down in the liver.
The term “sugar” only has one true meaning (technically speaking). Sugar = sucrose.

Just like tobacco and alcohol, sugar can be addictive and therefore it is considered by many as a drug. Alcohol and sugar have similar toxic liver effects.
Sugar is found in unlikely places, such as bread, marinades, tonic water, and tomato sauce.
Today, many product manufacturers are very good at disguising the word “sugar”, they use other complicated words to mask its presence. Here are some of the common nicknames they use: Beet sugar, cane crystals, brown sugar, cane juice crystals, cane sugar, barley malt syrup, brown rice syrup, fructose, sucrose, dehydrated cane juice, evaporated cane juice, glucose, fruit juice concentrate, raw sugar.
Top high sugar fruits include figs and grapes (16.3% sugar), litchis (15.2%), pomegranates (13.7%), mangoes (13.7%), and cherries (12.8%). Top low sugar fruits include olives (0%), avocados (0.7%), limes (1.7%), starfruits (4%), and cranberries (4.3%). Top sugar foods include cola, sweetened cereals, white bread, candy, and granola/ energy bars.
Sugar Pregnancy Test
Sugar pregnancy test is one of the most popular, cheapest, and harmless method you can try. It is reportedly that sugar will react differently to the urine of a woman who is pregnant and to a woman who have not conceived.
Before you begin this test, make sure you use your urine from the first pee in the morning as it is the most concentrated one, and do not drink a lot of water before doing this.
Take a very clean bowl and add three teaspoons of pure white sugar. Pour your urine into the bowl but not too much. Wait for about 5 minutes for any signs of a reaction: if the sugar clump up in the bowl, it means that you are pregnant, but if the sugar dissolve then you are not pregnant.
There will be detectable amounts of HCG when you are in the early stages of pregnancy. If this hormone is evident in your urine then the sugar will instead clump rather than dissolving immediately.
How to Use Sugar to Smoothen Your Lips
Since our lips are fragile, we should not use this very often. However, this method can really remove any dead peeling skin and reveal your soft skin underneath.
Mix a tablespoon of white sugar (or brown sugar) with olive oil or honey to get it to stick together. Rub the mixture very gently on the lips for about a minute, after that rinse it off with cold water. You can continue to apply lip balm in order to prevent dryness.
Using Sugar to Remove Dead Skin
Dead skin can be scraped away using sugar particles with a very gentle touch. Your home sugar also contains a little glycolic acid which is useful for keeping your skin smooth and fights scaling. Before you begin, you need to know that the scrub may cause temporary blotchiness especially in sensitive skin.
Mix sugar with oil, olive oil is the common option but you can choose other natural carrier oil also if you want. The combination of olive oil and sugar makes an excellent scrub for every types of skin. While olive oil helps moisturize our skin, the sugar particles work as a great dead skin cells remover.
Mix sugars with olive oil, you can also add a little lemon juice or 2-3 teaspoons of honey to the mixture. After that apply the mixture to any part of your skin and rub it gently. Rinse it off with cold or lukewarm water. Keep in mind that if overused, this can cause damage.

Sugar is a hot food neutralizer. Granulates sugar and honey are both proven to be an effective way to modify your pepper experience.
Take an 8-ounce glass of water and add a tablespoon of sugar in it, after that use the mixture to coat your tongue in order to tame the chilli heat. How much sugar you need will depend on how intense the pepper is. Combining sugar and dairy, in a pudding or an ice cream can also neutralize the heat
To Make Flowers Last Longer
Mix two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with the vase water before adding your flowers. Do remember to change the water (with more sugar and vinegar, of course) every few days so that the longevity of the flowers can be enhanced
