Healthy Alternatives for kids

Updated on June 16, 2013

Healthy alternatives for school lunch boxes

Being a Mum I find it stressful when finding healthy alternatives for my kids’ school lunches. After reading up on all the additives and preservatives added in foods, you need to have a serious look at what you feed your children. Certain foods with additives do cause behavioural and concentration problems.

Giving your children fresh filtered water instead of soft drinks and juice boxes loaded with preservatives and sugar, will be beneficial and hydrates the body. It helps to flush out toxins in the body and processing brain function.

I have made the change to provide my children with organic or foods without additives/preservatives. Here are some ideas for school lunch boxes that I have come across.

· Fresh Fruit - sliced/diced/ chopped

· Vegie Chips - has no nasties

· Fresh Vegetables –sliced/diced/chopped

· Rice crackers - plain , the flavoured has MSG

· Home made cookies

· Home made muffins - please add chopped fruit

· A slice of vegetable quiche, vegetable slice or a vegetable muffin

· Chopped Vegetables e.g Carrots Sticks

· With a nut free school policy, Carmans Museli Bites are made from oats and fruits. Very Healthy

. During the summer months, children enjoy sushi as a great lunch alternative. Easy to make and you can create your own version. For example: advocado, rice, carrot, and cucumber.

Vitamins and Minerals

There are so many healthier alternatives to give to your children. As parents we are responsible for their wellbeing. If you start feeding your children healthy foods at an early age, they will benefit.

Vitamins and minerals are an essential part of healthy children.  Make sure your children receives plenty of fish , fruit and vegetables.  If they don't get enough of omega 3, iodine and other minerals, there are alternatives such as: fish oil supplements, multivitamins or the one that I give my children is Blackmores Mineral Minds.  It has all the essential vitamins including iodine for brain function.

There are a different range of products, take your time and research which one will be the best for your child.

Well done Gloria! an informative blog for all parents to start taking note of. If all the proper food was introduced to children from an early age, it would then be carried through into their adult life. Starting them early would make a world of difference to them, both mentally and physically. A great read!

This hub is a must for mothers of young children. I used most of these ideas when my children were young. I use to even feed my babies fresh food by using the blender. So I totally agree with everything that you wrote in your hub. Very good hub. Keep up the good work.

I think if more people gave only healthy food to their children then it would become the norm and kids would start to accept that is what they eat. Not feel hard done by that they are not getting juice and chips in their lunch boxes. Well done Gloria for making a stand. Do you find your kids eat all the food?
