Healthy Benefits of Vitamin B12

Updated on June 18, 2013

Like so many people today, we often wonder why it is that we're so restless and plagued with fatigue. Maybe it's that we're overworked or maybe it's because we haven't had enough sleep? Or, maybe it's because we're missing a very important vitamin from our daily routine. Here's where Vitamin B12 comes in. Vitamin B12 is necessary for many important functions of the human body. One of its main functions is to keep your red blood cells and nerve cells functioning and healthy. A deficiency of this very important vitamin can cause anemia, fatigue, constipation, weakness, depression, and poor memory just to name a few. So what are some more benefits of this very important vitamin you ask? Let's discuss a few.

It Gives You Energy

Taking vitamin B12 daily helps your body turn carbohydrates into glucose which in return gives you more energy. This decreases fatigue and restlessness. Who wouldn't want their carbs turned into energy, right?

Healthy Hair, Nails, and Skin

Vitamin B12 is necessary for the proper care of healthy hair, nails, and skin. It assists with cell reproduction which in turn gives a constant renewal of healthy hair, nails, and skin. The next time you're wondering why your hair or nails aren't growing like they should be and your skin isn't looking as healthy as it should be, maybe you should consider taking vitamin B12. (Of course after you have ruled out any major problems) You can also eat foods rich in vitamin B12. (We'll name some of those foods later on in the article)

It Helps in the Fight Against Cancers

Vitamin B12 also helps us to protect ourselves against certain cancers. Although it does not protect us 100%, it does play a major role in helping us to prevent Colon, Breast, Lung, and Prostrate Cancer just to name a few.

It Helps to Regulate Our Nervous System

Vitamin B12 helps us with the healthy regulation of our nervous system. Taking Vitamin B12 helps us to reduce stress and depression giving us a more balanced lifestyle.

It Protects us Against Heart Disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death each year for both men and women combined. One in four people will die from complications of heart disease every year. Taking Vitamin B12 daily helps to reduce cholesterol levels which in turn protects again stroke and high blood pressure.

  2. Fish
  3. Crabs and Lobster
  4. Beef
  5. Lamb

Great hub Mommiegee. I’m a big fan of vitamins in general and Vit. B12 in particular. My father-in-law was a diabetes sufferer before he passed away and suffered greatly from restless legs syndrome. Vit. B12 helped him tremendously in reducing the symptoms and he was able to live more comfortably. Voted up and useful.
