How to do your work effectively?

Updated on October 18, 2014

"Get going. Move forward. Aim High. Plan a takeoff. Don't just sit on the runway and hope someone will come along and push the airplane. It simply won't happen. Change your attitude and gain some altitude. Believe me, you'll love it up here.” -Donald Trump

Do you feel bored to do your own personal work? Do you allocate the work to be done by someone else? When you thrust your responsibility on someone you have to wait till that person gets his free time to do what you asked him to do.

Why are you lethargic to do your own work?

The basic reason is that you feel lazy and bored. ‘When someone is there to do my work why should I bother myself’?

I too had been a culprit in this matter.

My husband’s ancestral property was yielding an income which helped me lead my life in peace. But I was told that the rent I collected was lot less than the prevailing market value. I was in Chennai and the property was in Dindigul, some five hundred kilometers away.

I sought the help of some elders there to talk on my behalf to the tenant. And they promised to help me, but days passed with no result.

I waited for many months, but still I did not have any fruitful reply. ‘It is my work. I will do it', I told myself. I went to Dindigul personally and talked to my tenant. Amazingly he agreed to the rent I was asking and my work was over within two hours. A work which had dragged for months because I did not involve myself!

It became possible only when I made the decision that ‘I will do my own work’.

Are you dependent on others in your workplace?

If you do so you become a slave to their timings. They will help you only when they have some free time. Invariably the time never comes and you wait and linger thinking you will receive some help from them.

Do not seek the help of your colleagues to finish your work. They have their own work load and if you depend on them your work suffers. When you depend on your colleagues to have your work done, you face a back log of your work which intensifies your stress level. Why do you want others to do your work when you have the ability do it with proficiency? All that is needed is your input of dedication and sincerity.

You can seek the help of your colleagues only to improve your knowledge about your work. It helps you in doing your work with more efficiency. But your work should be done only by you. When you concentrate with pencil sharp keenness you finish your work with efficiency and with minimum time.

When I was a small girl, the story I read made quiet an impact on me!

There lived a sparrow in a paddy field along with her two baby birds. The male sparrow came one day with a worried face and told that he overheard the owner of the paddy field telling his son that he had asked some workers from the nearby village to come and do the harvesting.

‘Our nest will be destroyed’, panicked the father sparrow. ‘Let us shift somewhere’, he said.

The mother sparrow was not worried.

'Do not worry, we will not be disturbed’.

She was true as no one came to disturb them.

'Let us ask the workers from our own village to do the harvesting’, the farmer told his son.

‘Is it the time to go?’ asked the father sparrow.

‘Not yet’, told the mother sparrow.

Again no one came to do the harvesting.

‘It is no use depending on others to do our work. Let us both do it tomorrow', the farmer told his son.

‘Now is the time to go’ told the mother sparrow.

‘Why’ asked the father sparrow

‘The farmer could not finish his work as he was dependent on others for his work and so we could wait. Now he is relying on himself to finish the work and surely and definitely he will do it and our nest will be destroyed’, said the mother sparrow.

Such an effective story to stress the importance of doing your own work, isn't it?

When you rely on others for your work, you become complacent and smug. When you wait for others to do your work it will never be done.

Does doing your own work mean that you cannot delegate your work to others?

Shall we look at an example!

You cannot build a house on your own. You need a building contractor to do it, but you should not completely rely on him. You should make sure he builds your house properly using quality products. You buy the best when you buy the materials needed for your home personally.

You work for today and every day, then work your plan” -Margaret Thatcher

It is basically your lack of interest and enthusiasm that makes you seek other people’s help. When you are enthusiastic about your work, you want to do it yourself. This paves way for your achievement and success.
