How to live purposefully? Effective ways to achieve it!

Updated on October 24, 2013

‘Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.’ – John F.Kennedy

Life should have a purpose. Without purpose your life will not be worthwhile. You cannot drive a car just like that, can you? You need a destination to arrive, as otherwise you will be meandering about. It is the same with life also. Unless there is purpose you will not live your life as it should be. Life has become the survival of the fittest and the fittest are those with a purpose.

What is purpose in life?

  • Purpose is the focus you have about your life. Your focus can be anything, but it becomes the driving force of your life to make you successful.

Life is like a vast sea. It is an endless journey towards an unknown destination. But you cannot live your life blindly just because you do not know the results. You must have a purpose in life so that it is worthwhile and satisfactory.

Have you seen the life of the hippies? They have no purpose in life and live it as they want to. Their lifestyle is unconventional and is not bound by the values of life. Did they have happiness? Far from it! How can life without purpose have any value? Unless you have purpose and unless you work towards your purpose, life is not worth living.

Is achieving your purpose easy?

It is not an easy joke and you have to slave and sweat before achieving it and that is why many people leave it midway and settle down for a mundane and routine life. Are you one such person who feels it daunting to fight relentlessly to achieve something in your life? Do not fear the initial hardship as if you do so you fail to reach the incredible contentment waiting round the corner to give you the happiness you sought after.

What should be the purpose of your life?

  • You should have an aim or target in life.
  • You should work towards it.
  • You should achieve success.
  • The success you achieve must be got through honest means.
  • The success should make you happy.

The purpose of everyone’s life is happiness, but the journey to happiness is never the same for everyone. For some it is got with ease, but for many it is struggle all the way, but the struggle gives you immense results which make you look back at your life with pleasure.

Do not sit back

You cannot sit back and think everything you desire in life will come to you on its own. You have to swim towards it using your own limbs. No one can swim for you, can they? If you want stay afloat, you must keep moving otherwise you drown. In life, to be successful is staying afloat and your hard work is like limbs to take you through to achievement.

Many of you live your life as something that has got to be lived through. You cannot hope to have great success if you do so. You should try something different, work smartly and be relentless in your search for some purpose in life.

There are times when you feel letting go is easy than staying there. I too have felt it several times in my life. ‘Why set myself a goal and struggle to accomplish it. Why can’t l just drift through my life’ thoughts like these do plague me and I have to fight against such negative thoughts as I know if I buckle under pressure I will not achieve anything. It is very hard, but I keep trying.

‘Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life; everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated. Thus, everyone’s task is unique as is his specific opportunity to implement it’ – Viktor E.Frankl

Set a goal for yourself and make your actions targeted towards the goal. When negative thoughts try to pull you down, do not surrender meekly to its demands. You should shove it away from you and inculcate positive thoughts in your mind. When you have positive thoughts as your companion you are able to swim against the tide to reach the shore to see the aim you had in your life waiting there to embrace you.

Having an aim or purpose definitely gives the everyday grind a different point of view. When we realize that everything we do is for a specific reason, or for a higher objective, it helps us to keep going. Our goals and objectives may change as we get older. We begin to realize that certain things really aren't important. It is then that our relationships with others take on new meaning and purpose.
