Is Mental Health Really Important?
Is mental health important?
Mental health awareness month is here. There are many question that arise among society, such as:
- Does mental health actually exist?
- Is it real?
- Is it even important?
- Or is it all on our mind?
Many individuals who have been through traumatic events feel that if they could get through those events without speaking to anyone i.e. psychologists, counselors etc. then so can the youth of today. But what they fail to understand is that, they are still scared, maybe not physically but emotionally those individuals still have scares of their traumatic incident, they just refuse to admit it, the truth is that you can't help someone achieve their happiness unless you achieve your own happiness first. So what if...
What if..?
What if you woke up to sun shining brightly outside you home?
What if you woke up to the sound of rain gently tapping on your window?
What if you looked in the mirror and loved the person you saw?
What if you had the ability to make a difference in someone’s life?
What if you had a job to look forward to?
What if you were studying something which you loved?
What if you ignored the people who hate you?
What if you gave your time to those who loved you?
What if….?
So Why Don't You?
So, why don’t you?
Why don’t you ignore those who hate you?
Why don’t you spend time with your loved ones?
Why don’t you go out and help someone?
Why don’t you make your own happiness?
Why don’t you wake up and be happy with the day you are given?
Why don’t you love yourself?
Why don’t you…?
Live Your Life!
In the advanced technological world that we live in, many people feel offended by the smallest things, people seem unhappy with almost everything, this is one of the biggest reasons why depression has increased in our society. People feel afraid to talk, they feel afraid to express themselves, they feel afraid to go out and try something new, for the fear of “what will people say”. If you love something then go do it, you want to sing, go out and sing, you want to dance, then do it. Want to become a teacher, study towards it, do you want to become a doctor, why not!?
I was told I would never become a teacher, that I was more of a “quiet person” who could never raise her voice to kids, but I never saw it that way. I saw it as becoming a passion to teach kids how to read and write, to see smiles on their faces when they are happy, to be able to make a difference in their lives, and give them an education. And today… I am studying towards my teaching career, because I learnt not to be afraid of “what will people say”.
Unfortunately we are taught to live in a society where we need to respect our elders, do as we are told, but at the cost of our happiness. After working with many social workers and seeing many patients, listening to their stories, one thing that all of them had in common was that they were afraid, afraid to live their lives because of society. A gay couple was afraid to tell their families about their relationship because of the stigma against gay marriages. Most people don't even believe in mental health, depression, anxiety etc. we are told it's all in our mind, but it's time to prove them wrong...
Let us...
Let us feel blessed with what we have, let us learn to love ourselves, our families and our friends. If you want something get up and work for it. But don’t give up because someone told you, “You can’t do it” or ‘it’s not your kind of thing”. Do it because you want to, because it’s your passion, because it makes a difference, but mostly because …. it makes you happy. Each day is a new day for us all, we get to decide what to do with it. If you are facing a tough time or need to speak to someone, if you are going through depression or any other mental health illness, then don't be afraid to get help. Know that there are people out there who support you and who are willing to assist you. It's time to fight the stigma around mental health, only then will we achieve true peace, love and happiness across the world!
To end of let me answer the question for you..
Yes mental health is important, yes it exists and it is real.
Answers will be private.
Have you spoken to a professional (psychologist, social worker, counselor etc.) about your mental health?
