Tips On How To Improve The Appearance of Keloids

Updated on September 9, 2011

When we were a baby, our parents would see to it that we get the necessary immunizations to protect us and strengthen our immunity from communicable diseases. However, some of us are keloid forming and these areas of our body where we had these injections later on developed into a keloid. At first, we just took it for granted. But as the keloid continues to grow, we noticed that it has become unsightly and may cause problems later on. For those of you who want to get rid of it, below are some suggestions:

1) Calamansi

Some older people believe that calamansi helps minimize the size of keloids. After heating the calamansi, press it on the keloid for a few minutes. Just make sure that you can take how hot it is. They believe that heated calamansi shrinks keloids.

2) Contratubex

This is an ointment that you can apply to your keloid 3-4 times a day. I have this keloid in my left arm and have used Contratubex for a few weeks. My keloid shrunk and it continues to minimize it's size. I'm so happy with the results.

Contratubex can also be used for scars all over the body. For scars on your legs, you can mix a few of Contratubex in water and suspend your legs to it for 10-15 minutes. Better results were reported.

3) Mederma

I always hear about Mederma for the treatment of scars. One of my friends is using it and I checked the packaging and it can also help keloid problems. Mederma can be bought online. Not sure though if you can find it in your local pharmacies. I have used it a few times and it functions similar to Contratubex.

4) Steroid Injection

Steroid injection to the specific area is one way of treating keloids. However, according to some people who have undergone this kind of treatment, the keloid grows back. Some people don't recommend it.

5.) Operation

Another way is removal of the keloid by operation. However similar to Steriod Injections, there were reports that the keloid grew back.

The above are just tips based on research and actual experiences. I have a keloid and have used Contratubex and Mederma. Both are very much efeective with me. My keloid have shrunk it's size and I will continue using it till it disappears.

A friend of mine has been using Mederma for about 5 months on her belly stretch marks (from her pregnancy) and I can say it is working. Her scars seem less noticeable, although you can still see them.

      Only time will tell.

Good info on Keloids. Also if you are prone to developing keloids --

scars that grow beyond normal boundaries -- you are at risk of keloid formation from a tattoo.

Keloids may form any time you injure or traumatize your skin.

Thanks to all for the comments. So far from my experience, the most effective way to flatten your keloid is contratubex. You have to apply it at least twice a day. It only took two weeks with mine when I was able to see a big difference already. Now my keloid is almost not visible anymore.

I have on the left and right side of my back many keloids about 10 each side and they have been there for 10 years now. They were less and smaller until i had cortizone injections and they DOUBBLED in quantity and size! it was like at the site of the injection they cloned into conjoined I have seen at least 6 different dermatologists and NO ONE understands these keloids or how to treat them they only suggested cortizone or steroid patches or just "waiting until they go away as I get older"..... I just heard about contratubex while on vacation in the dominican republic a cousin of mine was using it on a huge keloid on her ear and now you can't even see it anymore. I was also motivated when I saw it is imported from germany...I have been using it for about 2-3 weeks now just twice a day and I see some keloids getting smaller and FLATTER and less red. I am convinced it will do wonders if i give it some time I would recommend it to any keloid sufferer. =)

I have one keloid scar on my shoulder from vaccination as well. It's about 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. I have several questions for you:

      1. How old are your scars?

      2. How are the results so far?

      3. How long has your treatment been before seeing results?

      4. Are you using any other treatments aside from Contratubex/Mederma?

      Thanks for any help!
