Low Placenta During Pregnancy : Placenta Previa
What Does A Low Placenta Mean
A low placenta during pregnancy is called placenta previa. In normal pregnancies the placenta forms on the inside wall of the uterus away from the cervix, giving the baby food and oxygen from the mother. However, in some cases the placenta is too low and covers part of or all of the cervix.
What Causes A Low Placenta During Pregnancy
No one knows for sure what causes a low placenta during pregnancy to occur but smoking and using drugs increase your risks of placenta previa. Also past C-sections, 5 or more pregnancies, an expecting mother older than 35, and a history of a low placenta during pregnancy can increase your risks of having one.
How Do You Know If You Have A Low Placenta
During your second trimester you normally have a routine ultrasound. This is when most cases of a low placenta during pregnancy are found. During the early days of pregnancy it's not too big of a deal to have a low placenta because in most cases it will move up on it's own. You will be scheduled for another ultrasound in your third trimester to check the position of your placenta at that time.
Low Placenta During Pregnancy
If it has not moved up on it's own a low placenta during pregnancy can cause extreme bleeding and put you and your baby's life at risk. For this reason you will normally be put on pelvic rest. This means no sex or vaginal exams for the remainder of your pregnancy. Also it's best to avoid doing heavy lifting and extreme cleaning. Basically, you'll need to take it easy. And, normally you will have to deliver early, around 37 weeks if possible to wait that long, via a cesarean section.
Placenta previa only accounts for 1 in 200 deliveries so it's not very common and if you do have a low placenta during pregnancy please know that chances are that'll it work itself out.
