Bipolar disorder
Changes in mood - elevated or irritable mood, changes in energy, rapid speech, ch anges in activity levels, inflated self-esteem and a decreased need for sleep, can be signs of bipolar disorder. From periods of extremely irritable or energized behavior (known as manic episodes) to very sad, indifferent or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes) it consists of both manic and depressive episodes separated by periods of normal mood. People who have manic attacks but do not experience depressive episodes are also classified as having bipolar disorder.

Schizophrenia can occur in younger children, but it is rare for it to occur before late adolescence.
