Importance of Self Esteem

Self esteem is very important and integral trait of each and every individual. We are witnessing a lot of instances on depression, suicide etc on a daily basis. Low self esteem can be the reason for the same.

Often we come across innumerous cases of depression due to low self esteem. It is more important to have healthy sense of self-esteem and loving yourself. According to Maxwell "“Low self esteem is like driving through life with your hand-break on”. Now you can realize how tough your life can be if you have a low self esteem. If someone is staying silent because of low self esteem, he or she is slowly growing cancer in their mind and getting in to a cowardly mode. This is quite dangerous as they have lost the habit to think properly and can think on deadly solutions like suicide, hurting one's self, depression and at times dejection and disconnected from the social setup.


Propellers of Low Self Esteem


Let’s first understand the propellers of Low self-esteem

  • Lack of Encouragement for any assigned endeavor. Supporting tasks are invisible. It is a best practice to motivate and encourage ourselves.
  • Low self-esteem is widely prevalent among ladies especially home makers where there is a limited or poor interaction with family members and there is no acknowledgement for the jobs done by them. Those ladies are confined to isolation both at social and personal levels and cannot regard them as an individual person with specific interest and goals.
  • Inability to comply with the professional expectations also triggers low self-esteem. Individuals are unable to live up to the demands of their profession.
  • There is a mismatch between Job profile and the individual aptitude to perform the required task.This leads to low self-esteem leaving the individual with a constant persistent sense of failure.It is also prevalent among ladies as they struggle to create a work-life balance.
  • Lack of Job securityWith the drain in the IT industry and a decrease in the allocation of projects, Individuals are scared lose their jobs all of a sudden. This scenario has led to many suicides –the sad outcome of self-esteem being shattered to the core.
  • Living in a healthy environment physically and mentally also plays a critical role .If the individual is brought up in an environment where women are looked down and abused, then self-esteem is an invisible factor for the women in that family and it is as dangerous as they bury themselves in sand and be quiet.In the busy world, every individual is concerned about materialistic values like brands, bank balance leading to “Self-depreciation”.
  • Humanistic approach is limited to speeches and books as the entire society leaps forward with a materialistic approach.Let’s first understand the propellers of Low self-esteem


How to combat against low self esteem ?

One of my friends was a victim of low social esteem because of the propellers stated above. She regarded herself as a wife, a mother, a daughter, but she stopped thinking about her identity and her interests. She had a sudden shock of realization when she faced an embarrassment in front of others by her own family. She had gone into a shell of low esteem and was unable to think on her own and go ahead with life. As a good friend,we helped her to regain her confidence by following the solutions as suggested below. This helped my friend to overcome her barriers and boosts her self-esteem. It is up to the individual to struggle against the odds and combat low self -esteem and ensure that she or he lives in a happy space with higher levels of confidence.

The below suggestions can be very useful to combat low self -esteem and overcome it. I am sharing it for the benefit of numerous people who are silently suffering low self -esteem and who are not aware of the invisible threats arising as an outcome of low self- esteem.

  • Regular Exercise, Morning walk, Reiki, Diet Management, Yoga as scheduled activity helps the individual to be active both physically and mentally combating against all problems and maintains a calm and peaceful behavior.Optimistic Approach is the need of the hour.
  • It is better to plan up a positive way to solve a specific problem or task. It is baseless to perceive everything as black or white.Pessimistic ideas can be the blockades for self-esteem. Normally, we need to think "IF I can’t do it, nobody else can do it ".
  • It is advisable to spend time in relaxing mode like having a hobby like pottery or dance and devote some time to it every day. I make it a point that I read a book, walk and collect coins as a hobby.
  • A Desire on your expectations...Napoleon Hill quoted that “When your desires are strong, you will appear to possess super powers to achieve”. I don’t have ambitious or long term goals.
  • I decide on three things that can make me happy and I do it with utmost interest and complete it. You will be seeing me as the happiest person at the end of the day.Self -Decision making is ideal for improvement and logical reasoning. Don’t keep waiting for someone else to take the right decision.
  • Be sure to work out yourself. Improve your decision- making capabilities by gaining more information and updating yourself with current affairs and global news.The important factor is spending time for you instead of staying closed up.
  • I ensure that I spend at least 30 mins a day for me in solace and will never allow anyone to take that time from me. You get a lot of satisfaction and confidence when you feel special and spend time for yourself.In case of an erratic confusing tense situation, it is important to have a confidante, need someone you can speak to freely about your worries. This minimizes or clears up depression leading to suicidal thoughts or Inferiority complex.
  • Friends are soul mates who have an open ear to hear your problems and they close the other ear so that the problem is not audible to any other person. Keep calm and ensure that you think before you speak in such situations.It is a best practice to take a minute and write down your best values to stimulate the positive thinking in you and also to make an effort to correct the negative factors.
  • Some of the values suggested are a peace of mind, security,close relationship with Recognition or fame, free time,happiness, spiritual fulfillment, family, friendships, longevity, sense of accomplishment etc.These practices will positively increase your confidence and self- esteem. This is a practically proven technique as the realization of best values Self Esteem is the most important psychological factor in the world.
  • Any individual is determined to improve him or her can follow the path of expected goals.Also prioritize your work and it is a best practice to the things you like first. When you have a number of disagreeable duties to perform, always do the most disagreeable first
  • Accept life as it comes is another proven solution for combating against low self -esteem. Don’t ask "Why me " if you are facing a problem .You need to think "How can I handle this ".


A slight change in thinking can bring wonders to your life with positive solutions.Last but not least “Success is never final and failure is never fatal, it is only the self esteem combined with courage that counts. Let us combat low self esteem, and become the change we seek in the world.
