What Does A Fictitious Vitamin And D2 Have In Common?

Maybe you have heard of the sit-com I Love Lucy and the famous Vitameatavegamin episode. Sixty years later, we are still laughing.

The Vitameatavegamin episode is one of my favorites.

"Hello, friends," Lucy says to the studio audience as she holds a bottle of Vitameatavegamin.

"I'm your Vitameatavegamin girl. Are you tired, run-down, listless? Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular? The answer to all your problems is in this little bottle…….spoon your way to health." She winks.

Vitammeatavegamin, as you probably know, was a fictitious vitamin, but wouldn't it be nice if there was a vitamin that was the answer to all your problems?

Unfortunately, there's no silver bullet, but vitamin D3 comes close. Studies in the past five years suggest vitamin D is quite amazing.

Vitamin D not only helps prevent the flu, it can prevent and potentially cure many debilitating diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, neurological system disorders, kidney failure, reproductive system disorders, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, autism, muscle weakness, obesity, tooth decay and more.

And it will make you popular at parties. ;-)

Of course, if you are 50 pounds overweight and eat the majority of your meals at Burger King, or cuisine of a similar nature, you certainly won't feel the full effects of Vitamin D.

Also, if you are taking the wrong vitamin D supplement---D2 (rather than D3)---you might as well be taking Vitammeatavegamin.

Why?

Synthetic vitamins are just a small part of the whole vitamin complex, a synthesized fraction. A synthetic vitamin is not worthy of the name.

What You Need To Know About Oral Supplementation

There are actually 5 forms of vitamin D: D1, D2, D3, D4, D5.

Only one matters to human health and that is vitamin D3.

Vitamin D3 is the healthy kind your body makes when exposed to sunshine. The toxic kind, D2, is made from ergosterol, a fungal steroid. It is the form of vitaminD used in doctor prescriptions in North America. Synthetic vitamin D2 was first produced in the 1920s through ultraviolet exposure of foods. The process was patented and licensed to drug companies for use in prescription vitamins. The vitamin D that is added to milk is not D3 but the highly inferior vitamin D2. (Dr. Ray Peat).

Avoid doctors' prescriptions for vitamin D2

If your doctor prescribes vitamin D, it is most likely Drisdol, which is the synthetic vitamin D2.

Taking synthetic vitamin D2 instead of D3 is like eating your menu instead of the actual food.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin

Vitamins come in two types: water soluble and fat soluble. Soluble means they either dissolve in water or they dissolve in fat. Water soluble vitamins such as the Bs and vitamin C never build up toxicities in the body when taken in excess because the excess is excreted through our urine.

Fat soluble vitamins such as A,D,E and K, on the other hand, are absorbed and stored in your fat.

Fat soluble vitamins have to be taken with more attention than the water soluble vitamins. A larger dosage is not necessarily better because the fat solubles can build up and lead to problems.

Because most of us are usually deficient and need high amounts of vitamin D for optimal health (5000--8000 IUs), it is harder to exceed recommended levels and experience negative side effects.

The smartest course to pursue is to have your levels checked by a testing lab.

Recommended Dosage of vitamin D3

The Vitamin D Council recommends the following amounts of supplemental vitamin D3 per day in the absence of proper sun exposure. These are only estimated amounts.

  • Healthy children over the age of 1 years – 1,000 IU per every 25 lbs of body weight.
  • Healthy adults and adolescents – at least 5,000 IU.
  • Pregnant and lactating mothers - at least 6,000 IU.

Additionally, children and adults with chronic health conditions such as autism, MS, cancer, heart disease, or obesity may need as much as double these amounts.

The US government recommends 200 IUs a day up to age 50, 400 IUs to age 70, and 600 IUs over 70. Most of the studies about vitamin D that have been published in the past five years say that this is not nearly enough.


Vitamin D Blood Tests - What type and When

Don't be vague when asking your doctor for a blood test. If you just ask for a vitamin D test your doctor may give you the wrong one.

There are two types of vitamin D tests:

25(OH)D - 25-hydroxyvitamin D

1,25(OH)D - 25-hydroxyvitamin D [check]

The one you want is 25(OH)D. "Twenty-five keeps you alive."

You can arrange to have your blood drawn by private companies specializing in drawing blood. Just as your doctor does, they then send it to a laboratory to have your blood analyzed. The difference between you doing it and having your doctor do it is that you get to choose the laboratory you want. As of this posting, LabCorp is considered the most accurate lab for blood test. DiaSorin is the assay (test) to ask for when having your vitamin D levels checked. DiaSorin is the gold standard and is used in most vitamin D studies.

When you get your results back, what you are aiming for is a target of 50 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) is deficient. Anywhere from 50 to 70 ng/ml is acceptable. If you are treating disease such as heart disease or cancer 70-100 ng/ml range is advisable.

ZRT - Blood Spot Test

If you don't want to go to your doctor or a private company to have your blood drawn and tested, there is an easy alternative.

Try a home test like the ZRT Blood Spot Test. A home test is reasonably priced starting at $65.

If you don't like having your blood drawn, this is an especially attractive option. You still need to test your blood, but it is done with a mere prick and drop of blood on a piece of blotter paper.

Samples are returned to ZRT, in a postage paid envelope.

The ZRT test is approved by The Vitamin D Council who verifies that ZRT D test is as accurate as LabCorp and DiaSorin, which are considered the "Gold Standard" in vitamin D testing.

Vitamin D In Foods

There are few foods that contain vitamin D3, but it is hard to get all your vitamin D requirements from food alone.

Vitamin D Approved Foods:

Seafood

Salmon, tuna, mackerel, fish liver oils, marlin, herring, and sardines. Seafood should be wild not farm raised. Fish get their vitamin D from nutrients in algae.

Egg Yolks

Eggs should be from free range chickens----better for you, better for the chickens.

Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil is an excellent source of vitamin D. Be careful to get cod liver oil with the right A to D ratio. What's the right ratio? The thing to do is make sure the vitamin A does not exceed the vitamin D. If they are the same, that's alright; it's when the A exceeds the D that the A has an antagonistic action to counteract the D.

That is why Dr. Cannel, founder of The Vitamin D Council recommends Carlson Cold Liver oil, which has a good ratio of A and D.

Vitamin D's Helpers:

green tea

Drinking 5 cups of Green tea a day has antiviral components.

If five cups of green tea is too much green tea for you, a great alternative is green tea concentrate. All you need is a couple of drops in water and you have your quota for the day.

A recent study shows the effectiveness of green tea on combating the flu.

vitamin K2 and zinc

Ideally, you should supplement with vitamin K2 as well. 150mg is about right.

K2 is important for proper absorption of vitamin D3. You can also eat fermented foods like organic sauerkraut (not the overly processed kind you find in the grocery store, but the organic products you will find in health food stores like Whole Foods). Fermented foods like sauerkraut are high in vitamin K.

zinc

"A study out this year by Dr. Zine Kechrid and colleagues showed that vitamin D supplementation in rats dramatically increased the amount of glutathione in the liver. The Vitamin D supplemented rats tripled the amount of liver glutathione over the vitamin D deficient rats.

Glutathione is a "master" antioxidant in your body, far outstripping the importance of any antioxidant you can take by mouth. It has multiple functions"

The Vitamin D Council:

  • It is the major natural antioxidant produced by the cells, participating directly in the neutralization of free radicals, toxins and reactive oxygen species (products of combustion in your body), as well as maintaining the effectiveness of antioxidants you get in your diet or take by mouth such as vitamins C and E.
  • It regulates nitric oxide, which is deadly if unregulated.
  • It is important in DNA synthesis and repair, protein synthesis, prostaglandin synthesis, detoxification, and enzyme activation. Thus, glutathione affects every system in the body, especially the immune system, the nervous system, the gastrointestinal system and the lungs.
  • It is vital for iron metabolism. Cells depleted of glutathione show iron starvation and impairment of the enzymatic activity reliant on iron with rapid death following."

"In addition, the Kechrid study showed the importance of taking zinc together with vitamin D, as zinc deficient rats given vitamin D did not make as much glutathione as zinc sufficient rats. The incidence of low zinc intake in the world and its importance to the human body is enormous."

That’s why the Vitamin D Council recommends that you take at least 10 mg of zinc with your vitamin D.

Foods that contain zinc:

oysters

pumpkin seeds

spinach

beef

green peas

beans

Flu Season Is Right Around The Corner

Optimal supplementation is important now. Supplementation is especially critical if you are approaching flu season vitamin D deficient. I have researched and found the best supplements and health products available, which are for sale below.

      Your comment on my whole food vs. synthetic vitamins post that you are taking my suggested whole food supplements. Coupled with the vitamin K and D3 spray you are now taking, is awesome.       Thanks, I spent a lot of time on this post. Vitamin D has so much to offer us, this is just scratching the surface of vitamin D's benefits.

      The D vitamins I have for sale on this post, I have used. My favorite is Dr. Mercola's multivitamins and the D3 spray. The vitamins are 5,000 iu's but during the winter months we need more D so I also use the D3 which is 1,000 iu's. Altogether I take about 8,000 ius in the winter.
