My Keto Journey
The Ketogenic Diet and Me
For almost all my life I have struggled with my weight. I used to get teased by my classmates in school as well as listen to all my relatives tell me how fat I was or how fat I have gotten. In 2012, I had so many chronic health conditions that my doctor sent me to go talk to a bariatric surgeon. I was in complete shock that my doctor had even thought of sending me to a bariatric center. Was I in this much denial about my weight?
I was finally convinced that I needed to take my life back and do something about it. I agreed to get the gastric sleeve done. It took me about a year to lose all the weight and I was finally "skinny" to my families standards. Since then I have had my son and now I can't seem to get the weight back off. I am not nearly as big as I used to be before surgery but the weight is starting to become an inconvenience.
After seeing my nutritionist it was then that I was told my body is Insulin Resistant, due to several factors and having PCOS was one of them. She mentioned getting into the Ketogenic Diet so here I am. To document my weight loss journey through Keto and Keto only, no extra help.

What is the Ketogenic Diet?
The Ketogenic Diet is a Low-Carb, High-Fat and Moderate Protein Diet. A lot of you will say "High-Fat? That does not sound healthy at all." I was definitely asking the same question as you when my nutritionist explained it to me. With the ketogenic diet we are using the good fat, no more vegetable oil, canola oil, so on and so forth. Reason being is that this oils that we are so used to cooking with is just straight processed trans fat. Their are so many risk from cooking with these oils it is ridiculous to think, how did we survive this long using them. We have certainly increased out risk of heart disease, inflammation and studies have even shown to increase cancer. As long as you are using the right kinds of oils you will never have to worry about this issues.
Why low-carb? Because to me it has been very beneficial. I have lowered my blood sugar as well as my insulin levels. A low carb diet is super beneficial to the body. It supplies energy to the brain, you are fueling your energy off of the fat that you are eating. I mean we have all been there, were we have eaten a massive carb overload meal and all we wanted to do afterwards was unbutton our pants and take a nap. Since being low carb and eating more fats I have had the energy to pretty much do everything that I was too tired to do before.
Moderate Protein - If we eat more protein than fats then we are defeating the purpose of eating low carb. Everything is set in place for a reason. If we eat an abundance of protein, it would be like eating carbs but without eating carbs. Excess protein would be converted to blood sugar, which is the same thing that eating carbs does. I eat a lot of chicken and fatty steaks. A little bit of that actually goes a long way.
I can't wait to share my journey with you all!
I am currently 164lbs, my goal weight is to be about 120 lbs. I have not set a time line of when to lose all this weight, just as long as I know that the weight is coming off. The end goal to this weight loss is to try to conceive baby #2 as it has been a challenge being over weight with PCOS and none of the fertility treatments are working. I conceived my son naturally at 120 lbs so that is my body telling me that is it's baby making wight.
This is not going to be an easy journey as I live in a house full of carb eaters. But for those of you who are on Keto I just want you to know that you are not alone. I hope that by following my journey I can inspire someone that it is never to late to take your life back from being overweight. You will get a lot of judgment along the way but you are doing what is best for yourself and your health. Do not let the judgmental comments get you down. We all have to start somewhere even if that means reading a few blogs here and there to get you inspired to step out and do something. Keto does not have to be hard, keep it simple and you will thrive.
