I am getting ready to cut my hair and donate it to Locks of Love for the third time. I decided that this would be a good time to share this information, in hopes of encouraging others to donate their hair to this wonderful charity as well.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides wigs and hairpieces to economically disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada (those under the age of 21) who have long term medical hair loss from any cause. Many of the children that are helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. Many of the others have a condition called alopecia areata. This condition causes hair loss, and has no known cause or cure.

Please read through the following information to see whether you are a candidate to donate your hair to Locks of Love.

There are a few simple guidelines that need to be met in order for your hair to be usable in creating wigs and hairpieces. Bleached and dreadlocked hair is not acceptable. (Permed and colored hair is fine though.) Hair must be put in a ponytail prior to being cut. It is ok if the ponytail has been stored for a while prior to donating it. Layered hair works too, as long as the longest layer measures 10 inches. Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure out the 10 inches. Most importantly, remember that 10 inches of hair (in a ponytail) measured from tip to tip, is the minimum amount of hair needed to create a wig or hairpiece.

I am so happy that I am able to help this wonderful charity. I have thick hair that grows very quickly. It is great to be able to put it to good use. How amazing is it that all I have to do is put my hair in a pony-tail, cut the pony-tail off making sure it measures at least 10 inches from tip to tip, fill out a quick form, and mail it to Locks of Love. Its that easy.

The best part about this charity is that they are able to help these children to live a little bit more normal lives. By creating high quality hairpieces for children with long term hair loss, Locks of Love is able to help the kids restore their confidence. With confidence, they can be happier, hopefully healthier, and able to reach for their dreams.

Please consider donating your hair to this wonderful charity. You can cut it yourself, or have your favorite hair dresser cut it for you. See the link below for more information.
