Normal production of mucus from the nasal lining is a natural defense against invading microorganisms and foreign bodies. Post nasal drip occurs when excess mucus is produced from the nasal lining. It is usually occur due to over activity of the immune system, nasal irritants and due to infections.

Commonest infections that cause post nasal drip are common cold, flu and sinus infections. Usually flu and common cold forms thin mucus and sinus infection produces thick mucus. Chronic sinus infection can sometimes cause smelly mouth that is associated with post nasal drip.

Common irritants that can cause post nasal drip are spicy foods, chemical fumes and large objects stuck inside the nose. Latter is more common among children.

They constrict nasal blood vessels and reduce the edema/secretions to clear the nose. But they are short lasting and can cause problems if you have hypertension. In addition, they should not be used more than twice per day. They do not cause sedation. But sometimes can cause nasal irritation and rebound nasal congestion after some time.

Side effects of Decon Nasal solution

Instillation of Decon can cause nasal irritation. In addition, it can cause rebound nasal congestion after some time. When it is instilled you will find that there is a bitter taste in the mouth. In addition, this medication should be used carefully in patients with hypertension and heart diseases. It is because Decon can temporary increase blood pressure.

Other common prescription anti-histamine nasal sprays

Astelin (azelastine) and Patanase (olopatadine) are common prescription only nasal sprays. They do not cause sedation. These nasal sprays can be used in infections as well as in allergies.

Steroid nasal sprays

Steroid nasal solution can be used when the decon nasal solution is failed. These are prescription only. In addition, steroid nasal sprays can be used against nasal polyps. There effect last for some time. But they should not be used in viral infections in the nose such as common cold and flu. For infections Decon is useful.

      Nasalcrom is the best nasal spray for nasal congestion. It has helped me a lot with sinus and nasal congestion. It blocks histamin release by the mast cells.
