Nitric Oxide Supplements Guide

Updated on September 6, 2010

If you have come to this page, you must be searching for information on or looking for a review of nitric oxide supplements. Before looking more in depth into the specific nitric oxide supplements available on the market today, here is an introduction to what is nitric oxide and what does the supplement do for your body.

Nitric Oxide (chemical formula: NO) is a simple gas molecule produced naturally by the body when the complex amino acid Arginine is broken down by enzymes in your body. Not to be confused with nitrious oxide (N2O) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which are a greenhouse gas and a toxic pollutant respectively.

Nitric oxide is essential to your bodily functions and is used by your body to send signals and communicate between cells. Some people may choose take a nitric oxide supplement because they have a natural deficiency in producing the molecule naturally. These supplements have also been very popular with body builders who see the effects of nitric oxide as an additional benefit to their muscle building efforts.

Why does anyone want to take a nitric oxide supplement if the molecule is already produced naturally in your body? Well, nitric oxide is used by the inner linings of the blood vessel to relax the surrounding smooth muscles which in turn allows for an increase in blood flow to the surrounding muscle. Naturally, increased blood flow to the muscles will mean that more oxygen and essential nutrients are delivered to the muscle which is crucial to the muscle building process.

The additional benefit to body builders that the supplement has is the increase in blood flow and the pump that they feel when lifting weights. The demand for nitric oxide and oxygen goes up drastically during intense exercise and weight training. Nitric oxide supplements can help satisfy the increase demand from the body and this usually boosts the individuals' strength and stamina which provides increased workout effectiveness and efficiency.

Using Nitric Oxide Safely

As with any other supplements, it is best to read the labels carefully and understand all the ingredients of the product before using it. Additional precautions should be taken if you have certain allergies or special health conditions and you should definitely consult your doctor before taking such supplements.

With that said, nitric oxide supplements do not have severe side effects if it is used correctly and with proper dosage. If you are just beginning to use a nitric oxide supplement, do not immediately jump into taking more than one serving per day. It is even a good idea to take one serving every other day to see how your body reacts to it. If you experience side effects such as headache or diarrhea, take less per dosage or even stop taking it all together. It usually takes a while for your body to adjust to it. However, once you are used to the supplement minor side effects should disappear.

Always use caution when taking the supplements. Like with any other food or beverage you eat or drink everyday, too much of anything is not healthy for you. So listen to your body and adjust the amount you taking accordingly. Again, I emphasize that you do not go over board and take too much of the supplement because it could be very damaging to your body.

Here are some other side effects that could be caused by taking excessively large amounts of nitric oxide: rapid heart rate, dry mouth, skin irritation, hives, vomiting, breathing problems, excessive sweating, tremors, and nausea.

Popular Nitric Oxide Supplements

There are so many supplements out there to choose from today, many people do not know where to start. Different people usually have different preferences and tastes when choosing the right supplement for themselves, so it is usually a good idea to read some product reviews and look at all the ingredients in each supplement to find the one you want. It is also a good idea to ask around and perhaps find someone who had used the product before about how they felt using the product and how well it has worked for them.

Here are some of the most popular nitric oxide supplements out there today:

  1. BSN NO-Explode has been very popular and you can find its shiny red bottle at almost any vitamin shop, GNC, or supplement store. It does also contain creatine so this may be preferable to some while a turn off to others. However, the down side is that this is usually the most expensive NO product.
  2. Optimum Nutrition Vassive-NO is from the makers of the 100% all natural whey protein that I use personally. These are cheaper than some of the other NO products out there but their products usually have very bland tastes. However, most people don't really choose their supplements based on taste alone.
  3. SuperPump 250 by Gaspari Nutrition is another popular NO supplement that is cheaper than NO-Explode. Many people has rated this to have given them better results than NO-Explode. It is also a little cheaper but has an acquired taste that takes time to get used to.
  4. Shock Therapy by Universal Nutrition is not as popular as some of the other brands out there but they have gotten mostly positive reviews. It is also praised for its taste versus some of the other supplements out there.

Other than these specific brands, there are many other companies that produce nitric oxide supplements. There are also capsule versions of some the most popular brands if you find that they might be more suitable for you. However, each individual is different and you should make the final decision based on your own needs and preference.
