Paleo Diet: Areas that you need to understand better

Updated on April 9, 2013

The Role of meats and eggs in the Paleo Diet

Apart from the seafood and lean meats, eggs are the second most important food in the Paleolithic diet. It is important to note that the animals from which the eggs are acquired must be a natural organic diet. Those chickens must eat insects, greens and greens. If it is lean meat, the cattle slaughtered must eat grass and other greens as part of their diet.

Fish must originate from the wild or if that is not the case, they have to be specifically fed what the wild fish eat. We should earnestly at all times seek meat that has low fats. Saturated fats should actually come from other sources.

Below is a complete list of foods which are acceptable in Paleo Diet for athletes:

Oils

There are a number of oils such as flaxseed, walnut, avocado and olive. Consume not more that 4 tablespoons every day. This should be adhered to more especially when your primary aim is to loose weight.

Beverages

· Wine- Avoid cooking wine because it has plenty of salt

· Diet sodas: You will be safer if you drink mineral waters.

· Hard liquor- consume 4 ounces only

· Beer- consuming 12 ounces will be good for you. Bear in mind that it is only glutten-free beer which is allowed in this diet.

Stone Age sweets

Consume dried fruits- This must not be more than 2 ounces per day. That is if you consider losing weight as one of your objectives.

Nuts that have been mixed with fresh and dried fruits.

How to treat fats, Sugar and Beverages

In paleo diet for athletes, the only sweetener which is allowed is honey. Make sure that only small amounts are consumed. This is done so as to get the best results from this diet. In sweetening food you can also use mustard, olive oil and lard. In the group of drinks as an athlete, you are allowed to drink tea and wine in small quantities.

What are the foods that must be avoided in Paleo Diet?

In paleo diet for athletes, you must be ready to avoid. Below are examples of foods that must be avoided completely. Under each category, I have given a list of foods that you most eliminate from your diet at all costs. The other types of foods that you must avoid are the cereal products such as rice, bread and pasta. The third group of foods that you can avoid is starchy vegetables such as potatoes and legumes like soy, peas, beans and others.

Dairy Foods

Yogurt, ice Cream, whole milk, Butter, Cheese, Cream, All processed foods made out of dairy products, Cheese, Powder milk, Ice milk

Cereals

Rye, Barley, Corn, Millet, oats, rice, sorghum, wheat(rolls, bread, crackers, noodles, doughnuts, cake, cookies, pasta, pizza, lasagna, flat bread, tortillas) and wide rice.

Cereal Grain like Seeds

Amaranth, Quinoa, Buckwheat

Legumes

Avoid all beans (navy beans, pinto beans, lima beans, garbanzo beans, horse beans, field beans, fava beans, mung beans, adzuki beans, broad beans among many others)

Lentils, Snow peas, chickpeas, peas, Miso, Peanut butter, soybeans and all products made from soybeans.

Starchy tubers

Avoid the consumption of potatoes and all products that originate from those potatoes.

Whenever you start a low-curb technique of eating, you are more likely to double your vegetable intake. Many Paleo experts always recommend that when you stop consuming starches, the most natural replacement is vegetables. You must do your background check well to find out which vegetables have the lowest amount of curb.

Most of the time, we will only see positive results from a diet after a considerable period of time. Some people adopt a diet and do not get any positive results at all. In matters of weight loss, do not be surprised if it takes more than three years. The main reason for this is because it takes a long period of time to get back to the base weight. Actually, for some other people it takes as long as five years to lose a substantial amount of weight.

Our bodies have a tendency of resisting any form of long-term loss of weight. If you achieve a weight loss of five percent, then, you are extremely successful. That calls for a lot of patience. I know many people who have given up in their quest for weight loss.

Popular and respected journals of medicine have in the past 30 years been publishing news in connection with weight loss and other topics. One of those is the New England Journal of Medicine. This revered journal had published a powerful article in 2008. This article was written after an intensive study which lasted for two years. The people who participated in this study had watched over their diets for a minimum of six years. This was a legendary study which was trend setting. Before that time, there was no study which had monitored the eating habits of its people for so long.

One of the biggest obstacles towards getting more calories in you body is the issue that many plants are inedible. Many plants that we consider as food are inedible when raw. Beans, grains and potatoes are good examples of those foods which are rendered useless in their raw form. The reason why these foods are not edible is because of the large amount of toxins. Never ever attempt to consume those plants because the outcome will be lethal. You can be very sick if you eat these foods. The discovery of cooking potatoes, beans and grains to make them edible was made some 10,000 years ago. Heat acted as a destroyer of toxins found in the foods under question. The grains which are made edible include but not limited to rice, wheat, corn, sorghum and barley.

There are also some grain-based foods such as flour, pasta, bread and noodles. These are foods which are mostly eaten by the modern man. They were not in existence during the Stone Age period. The cooking of the above mentioned foods has a very monumental effect on our food intake. They are known to contribute to the multiplying of food calories in our bodies. Our bodies were not designed to contain those large amounts of calories.

“Why then is man consistently eating these foods?” You may worry.

The main reason is that they can be stored for a long period of time. Remember there was nothing like refrigerator during the last hundred years and beyond. The third advantage of these groups of foods is that of having large amount of calories. Eating just a small amount of potatoes has an effect of increasing the amount of calories in your body.

The merits mentioned above made it very easy for the early farmers to both store and transport the foods. Nomads found it very suitable to carry along and during the time of plenty it became easier to maintain surpluses for the lean times. This is the time when the food gatherers found humble time at their disposal to develop a specialization in other fields. Men ended up becoming worriers, builders among other professions. This was the beginning of modern day civilizations. Coincidentally, it also marked the beginning of a move a way from the diet we were designed to follow. That is the Paleo diet for athletes.

Salty foods

Olives, sausages, processed meats, Ham, Salami, hot dogs, bacon, all commercial salads, cheeses, all canned meats, pork rinds, pickled foods, smoked meat.

Fatty Meats

Bacon, chicken and turkey legs, fatty beef roasts, T-bone steaks, and lamb chops, beef ribs, pork sausage. The fats which are introduced into our bodies have many side effects. We start developing problems with our blood pressure and other ailments which affect the way our hearts function. When the fats or cholesterol in specific blocks the blood vessels, the heart is forced to work harder in order to supply oxygen to the rest of the body. As the heart strains, it may fatigue. That is the cause of heart failure or heart attack.
