Bad smelling urine

Urine is as a result of the body excreting toxic substances. In other words, urine can be said to be a toxic waste removed by the body. Urine can also be described as a yellowish watery fluid which is created by the kidney, stored in the bladder and discharged by the urethra in mammals. Well, the fact about urine is that it tells a lot about what is going on in your body. Sometimes you notice that your urine smells bad and you might be wondering why. Well, in this post we would be looking at the possible causes or reason why your urine smells bad.

Reasons why your urine smells bad

Usually, urine has a smell. However, if your urine has a very strong odor, then the possible reasons why your urine smells bad have been explained below;

Dehydration

When your body lacks enough water to perform its functions properly, then you are said to be dehydrated. Dehydration effectively means that your body is using more fluids than what you are taking in. Symptoms of dehydration might include highly concentrated urine which smells like ammonia. This is a strong stench for your urine. Drinking more water can help solve dehydration problems and make your urine smell return back to normal.

Diet

The foods you eat might also be the reason why your urine smells bad. Certain diets can influence the smell of urine. Diets which include high contents of onions, chili pepper, curry, and garlic might give your urine a strong smell. Drinking a lot of coffee can also make your urine smell bad. Eating Asparagus could also be the reason why your urine smells bad.

Liver disease

A more serious possible reason why your urine smells bad could be caused by liver disease. Liver disease is not a very common cause of urine bad odor. However, the symptoms of liver disease might include strong urine odor. When you experience some symptoms of the symptoms of liver disease such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, yellow skin, abdominal pains in addition to strong urine stench, then the probable cause of your bad urine odor is the liver disease.

Genetic diseases

There are genetic diseases that affect the urinary system of victims and include maple sugar disease and phenylketonuria disease. These genetic diseases make victims unable to break down some amino acids such as eucine, valine, phenylalanine, and isoleucine. However, these genetic diseases are very rare causes of urine stench.

Summary

The above are some of the major causes of smelly urine. However, in some conditions, smelly urine could be a result of an underlying health issue. Hence, it is advisable that you see a doctor.
