Understanding the Different Remedies For Ringworm

There are various remedies for ringworm which are widely available by an over the counter purchase. There are also remedies that will need to be prescribed by your doctor.

That will be decided by both the type of ringworm that you have, by the severity of the ringworm that you have and if it is a case of ringworm returning once again. Each treatment is very different and vitally important to get the right one for what is wrong with you.

There are of course various suggested home remedies for ringworm and I will cover them all in this article. Many of those are utter nonsense so I will advise you which of those to avoid. One of the biggest problems that many people find when they are searching for a cure to ringworm is that there are no quick answers.

Each treatment will take time but one things is certain. The quicker you start the treatment then the quicker it will be gone. The hardest one to get rid of is scalp ringworm and it is also in my opinion the nastiest one of them all.

It is not the type of thing that you can hide and at some stage you will lose chunks of your hair. I appreciate that athlete's foot is extremely uncomfortable but at least it can be hidden and kept out of sight.

Scalp, Nail, Face and Body Remedies for Ringworm That Work

Scalp Ringworm

This is a particularly nasty version of ringworm and will most often needs tablets or pills from your doctor to deal with this one. It is worthwhile initially to try some over the counter creams, should you want to avoid the embarrassment of seeing your doctor, or avoid the expenses in some cases.

It truly is nothing to be embarrassed about, but some people may feel that way. The following over the counter treatments work pretty well for scalp ringworm:

  • Head and Shoulders

  • Selsun Blue

Nail Ringworm (Hands or Toes)

Similar to the above this variant of ringworm usually needs a prescribed treatment from the doctor as it can get very severe. There are however some medications available that you may wish to try first.

This nail fungus is actually medically referred to as Onychomycosis and simply means an infection of the nail by a fungus. Ringworm has nothing to do with worms at all.

You will usually notice the nail change to a yellow or brown colour and it can spread from nail to nail quickly. The nail will become brittle and start to break and it is painful.

A remedy for this is any product with a Miconazole Nitrate included and it is usually combined with other ingredients such as Cocamide and Benzyl Alcohol.

This is a common remedy for athlete's foot which is a better known term for ringworm on the nails of the feet. This medicine needs to be applied two or three times a day to the affected area.

Lamisil is another popular choice as a remedy to get rid of nail fungus.

Face or Body Ringworm

Remedies for this type of ringworm include medicines such as Micatin, Lamisil, Lotrimin, Mycelex, Miconazole and Ketoconazole. There are many brands out there that can be bought over the counter.

As with all medicines they should be taken as shown in the instructions and especially with any remedy for ringworm, the complete dose must be taken to be fully effective.

Home Remedies For Ringworm

I have done a separate hub on the number of suggested home remedies for ringworm. Some people say these work and many others say they are old wife's tales. I have to be honest with you and tell you I have never tried any of them so I don't honestly know if they work or not.

I do know some people swear by them and others say they are a complete waste of time. It is up to you as to whether you decide to try them or not and it would certainly be very good to hear if they actually worked for you or not, so feel free to leave a comment as to their validity or not as the case may be.
