Conquer Low Self-Esteem

Updated on May 29, 2014

Do You Remember?

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”
- Theodore Roosevelt

Far better indeed! When we were children we soared. Do you remember? We knew no limits, and the future was unlimited because we had not experienced defeat. We had not been knocked down, and so we saw each day as an opportunity to enjoy and excel. Do you remember?

Then the first adversity came, and then another, and another, and our cloak of invincibility wore thin, and worse yet we began to believe in limits, and with that belief there came hesitancy. No longer did we head off on adventure without first weighing the possible pratfalls. We became….tentative!

“If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”~Vincent Van Gogh

Once tentativeness enters the picture, it is a very short journey to inaction, and at that point we have traded in those wings and become a mere mortal, trudging along, watching our footsteps, rather than reveling in the feel of the clouds upon our wings.

Where are you on this journey? Are you one who has taken your hits and now find it hard to rise above mediocrity? Perhaps mediocrity has become a safe harbor where you no longer have to experience the pain of failure. Unfortunately, in protecting oneself from failure, one also relinquishes the key to self-esteem, and then it is indeed a slow slide downhill.

It is high-time you strap on those wings, don’t you think? Your place is among the eagles, for we were not put on this earth to wallow in the mundane. We were given a higher purpose, and from this day forward let us aim our efforts towards that higher purpose.

I hear you say, “how can I; I am only one person among billions.” True, but what a person you are!

Slow down, take a deep breath, and deal with the bumps one at a time.
Slow down, take a deep breath, and deal with the bumps one at a time.

You Are Unique

There are currently seven billion inhabitants on this planet. Since the beginning of time there have been approximately 107 billion who have lived. Stop and think about this for a second: there has never been anyone like you in the history of the world. Quite frankly, your value is off the charts; you are one of a kind, the rarest of the rare; don’t you think it is about time you acted like it?

107 billion people and only one you! Your DNA, your appearance, your mind, your reactions, your thoughts, all add up to the personification of uniqueness. There can be no price tag attached to you because you are priceless.

And yet your wings have been clipped; you look around and ponder the hardships, cringe at the obstacles, and think you are powerless. You hear the words of detractors, those who would tell you that you cannot do something, and you believe them.

You are unique! When you were a child you believed this. You experienced the wonder of life and firmly believed that mountains were made to be moved…by you! Do you remember?

It is time to move mountains once again! You are unique! Act like it!

Sit With Me Awhile

Add up Your Assets

Look at you! Look in the mirror! What do you see? Do you see that special person with unlimited potential, or do you see wasted opportunities and self-loathing?

You are not without assets! You have a mind, a personality, a body and a heart. You have free will, and you are surrounded by opportunities. You are not a leaf blown by the winds of fate but rather a free spirit who is capable of making change by flapping your wings.

Look again in the mirror! Set aside the crippling self-doubt and see yourself as you truly are, a boundless source of energy which, when unleashed, can light up this world.

Make a list right now! Right this very second! Take out a piece of paper and write down your personal assets. I am not talking about money or other possessions; I want to know what you have inside of you; I want to know what makes you unique.

Now look at the list and repeat after me: I CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS AND FLY WITH THE EAGLES!

What Shall We Do with Our Newfound Self-worth?

What do you want to do? Remember, we are talking about changing your life, so what will that new life look like?

Are you a son or daughter, husband or wife? Are you an employee or employer, school teacher or lawyer? Are you an activist or team player, writer or artist? Do you play music from the gods or are you a machinist or clerk?

Whatever you are, be better! Go the extra mile and begin now! Be a better mother, father, daughter or son. Be a better employee, employer, school teacher or lawyer. Dazzle them as an activist, rock their word as a team player, write the next great novel or paint like the masters. Create music that will inspire or be the best damn machinist or clerk ever.

We are done with mediocrity! We are done walking with mere mortals when our rightful place is soaring above the mundane! Do not tell me that you cannot do it because I will tell you that you can and then push you out the door.

We are once again that child in the fields, watching the clouds slowly drift by as we contemplate a future that is ours to do with as we please. There are no limits…..THERE ARE NO LIMITS….to what we can do.

Do you remember?

I do not want to hear about your limitations! I do not want to hear about the restrictions and the hardships, the defeats and the fear. I do not want to hear the hundreds of reasons why you once thought you could not do something.

All I want to hear is the sound of your wings as you soar.

Always Love Yourself

No longer saddled with poor self-esteem
No longer saddled with poor self-esteem

One Final Note

You are ready now! You now know that you are unique. You now know that the greatest obstacle in the past, namely the restricting of yourself, has been removed. Yes, you have things to overcome, but they are nothing when faced by the power you possess.

As you begin this new life, please remember that which is crucial as we all go about our lives. Remember this one thing as you begin your new journey with the eagles: do all things with love!

Love yourself! Treat yourself like that rarest of things, and give yourself the love that you deserve. The past is gone; whatever it was that made you look down upon yourself, it is now behind you. From this day forward you are forging a new life, and that life is fueled by a love for yourself.

Love others! We are not in this alone, and it is time for us to embrace each other and lend a hand to those who desperately need it. Be compassionate! Be generous! Be the loving human being that you were born to be!

Imagine if you will seven billion eagles flying free of restrictions; what a wondrous sight that would be.

Now, it is time….spread your wings, look up the heavens….and fly!

2012 William D. Holland (aka billybuc)

As always you say it so well. Unless we have gone through some painful times it is hard to access what life is all about. And we all live with issues and pain so taking time out to appreciate ourselves is a valuable tool. I wish I could say that I do...and I do try, but sometimes so much is going on it is hard to put value on myself. Thanks for the reminder and for me to take time to appreciate who I am...

For years now at work, I have been told to "never get my head above the grass, because that is when you get it chopped off!" "The best you can hope for here to to be ignored." "Don't look for a pat on the back, look for a knife in the back." Positive reinforcement, huh?

But behind the scenes, my beautiful wife has ALWAYS pushed me to acknowledge the difference I make in my work. But for her, I would be one of those who settle for mediocrity. But I know there are oh so many who feel as I would if not for her. Well done, Billy! Again! We do need to rise above the level we have sunken to as a country, and stand up tall and proud one person at a time for ourselves, for our faith, for our families, and for our Country. If we don't who will?

Another winner from our favorite teacher, Mr. Holland. I believe this, with every fiber of my being, bill.....and try, as I'm able and the opportunity presents itself, to pass it along....this has to be reinforced before the big bad Negativity monster hangs around too long!!

Absolutely beautiful message and so true about feeling like we are invincible and can do anything when we were kids, but slowly our armor gets chipped away and we get to a place where we no longer think any of this. I have been trying recently to do more to better myself and enjoy what I am doing with my writing and have to tell you even though I am so busy all day long with that and my family, I have never been happier. So you may definitely be onto something. Thanks Bill and have voted, shared and tweeted too.

Mr. Archer, you are so right....if we don't, who will? It seems the whole country is waiting for someone else to do it....and that someone is not coming. We are fully capable of handling our problems; we just need to rise to the level that we were born to achieve.

Thank you Joplin! Have a great day!

Paula, I have seen this in every classroom that I have taught at.....the ":I can't do it" syndrome....and I am tired of it. As dad said, strap on some balls and get it done. I am capable of incredible things, but I never will accomplish a thing if I tell myself that I can't do it.

Preaching to the choir again, aren't I? LOL Thanks Paula!

Janine, this is the teacher in me....for far too many years I have had kids tell me that they can't do something....I look at them and ask them if they are suddenly crippled. Don't tell me you can't do something; find a way to get it done. Every single parent in this country should raise their children dreaming big dreams and allowing them the chance to fly.

Nothing like a positive hub. In fact I did write a poem with a wound, and the prose wasn't too bad. Feeling "bottom lines" and uncomfortable pain made us realize how worth.. meaning, we could overcome it all since we already have hit rock bottom. Many battles wer lost but more wars were won. As writers we are unique and... we were chosen to carry a message to our fellow man. Take care Billy.

Hi billybuc: Thank you for writing this hub. It has so much of what I always think about. Allow me to paste the next: " Your place is among the eagles, for we were not put on this earth to wallow in the mundane. We were given a higher purpose, and from this day forward let us aim our efforts towards that higher purpose." The purpose of life, the purpose of my life… The problem in my case is that there are different categories to place what my purpose is: ex. social. The only purpose I want to work for is the one that does not make sense in society, in the material world.

      Anyway, I love the hub.

You have such a way with words, reminding people of how unique we are and how nothing is impossible so long as we love ourselves and love what we do or love what we want to accomplish. I can attest that nothing is off limits when we have faith and put all of our efforts into it.

I am someone who had a fear of public speaking, yet I was called to lead worship for our church's evening service. Me? I didn't even sing in the shower for fear that someone would hear me. But, upon being asked to serve in that manner, I had to put my fear aside and jump in with everything I had inside me. I had to let go of my fears and come to believe in myself. I jumped in with all of me and I lead worship for that church for four years before moving away and into retirement. Now, my fear of public speaking has been cured. I also had a fear of being active in forums, because to me, participating in forums was the same as speaking in public. Now, here I am, typing the words that I would speak if you were here in front of me. I am a true believer that nothing is off limits. As long as we believe in ourselves, we can soar with the eagles.

Bill - Another strong offering my friend. I think Pee Wee Herman once got in trouble for loving himself.... naww, forget it! When opportunity and preparation meet success can take place. Yet, if a person has no belief in their abilities or confidence in their talents, that opportunity is going by the wayside. You don't get to where you want to go unless you aim for it. That's true in navigation and life. Some just need to get their compasses out and head in the direction best for them. Great job, my friend!

    • Natashalh profile image

I listened to a fantastic TED talk a while ago about how people say "oh, once I do such and such, I'll be happy," but once you get there, you just move the goal post for 'happy.' However, research indicates that people who are already positive are intrinsically more successful because happiness, self-worth, etc. alters your brain chemistry, makes you less stressed, and makes it easier for you to be productive! So society has us going about things literally backwards. Success doesn't precede happiness - happiness causes success.

I like that you suggest writing things down - I think that is absolutely key to rewiring your brain. I used to be really, really self-doubting and self-deprecating. It took years of effort to change the way I think about myself. It's difficult and no one can do it for you, but techniques and strategies from others can show you the path you must choose to take. I hope your hub inspires people to be the change they need and to take charge of their lives!

Wonderful comment Natasha! So wise for so young!

Billy - I feel like you pulled up a chair and spoke to me face to face - that's how powerful and uplifting your wisdom is. So many are reading this and being provided the faith and healing so many need right now. The power of the word is amazing when used to fight the good fight.

I'm proud of you. As Dad used to say "Tomorrow is another day with endless possibilities." (I only hope they don't include my sweat pants falling down!)

Sending my best to you friend. XOXO

Ah, Billybuc, now this one has touched my heart deeply. I hope you don't mind calling one of your hubs sweet, but it is so true, that we must love ourselves before we are able to love others. I really love this one, and I am glad I found it this late night in my sea of emails. God bless you dear one for this very special write here. Voted Way Up to the Heavens and back on this one. It is 11:24 p.m. sweet home Alabama time, so I know it is very late for you at this moment. I pray you have a good night's rest to start all over again this next morn.

"Let's reach the cloud together and soar with the eagles...yes, up up there in the sky..."this is what's on my mind while I am reading this great hub of yours Bill. I am so exciting and hoping that we all could get influenced by your message and wake ourselves up to start loving ourselves, loving others and forget about what our "limitations" we have always limited to ourselves...

A well done job again you have done for us, appreciate much for the sharing Bill, Cheers!

Bill, once again a fabulous hub. Very motivating and uplifting. I firmly believe we our limited in our performance by our mind, not by our physical capabilities. We have to believe we can do and we will soar with the Eagles, as you say.

Affirmation has a lot of power and those superhuman feats that we hear of, ever so often, in the face of a do or die situation, are only possible because the mind believes it.

Voting it up, useful, awesome and shared.

A very important message for all of us, to love the person that we are and be proud. It is also important to be good and kind human beings. Loved these lines -

"I do not want to hear about your limitations! I do not want to hear about the restrictions and the hardships, the defeats and the fear. I do not want to hear the hundreds of reasons why you once thought you could not do something.

All I want to hear is the sound of your wings as you soar." Great hub voted up and shared.

Watch out, Joel Osteen, here comes Bill Holland. This was quite an inspirational speech coming from the life academician's pulpit.

It is an important message and one I have taught and have always subscribed to; however, sometimes it isn't possible if you have experienced constant emotional and physical batterings, and have become fodder for the masses.

One can keep trying to pull through and up using the bootstraps if one has complete autonomy in one's life . Sometimes enemies have other plans.

As usual, a great piece attached to a profound body of work by an excellent and motivational writer.

I never really ever thought I was nothing but I accepted I had no talent and the last three years have just overwhelmed me really. I discovered I can sketch, but no time to work on that, lol, since I discovered I could write and have a pretty good eye in photography! So anyone who thinks they can do nothing just have to step out there and take a chance! You are a great cheerleader and if someone else said that I am sorry, there is no way I am reading down this list! lol Up and sharing!

Hello billy! Voted up and everything and shared. Your first 3 paragraphs say it all; oh yes, I remember the optimism and power of childhood. I wanted to do everything - I believed I could to everything. This hub is full of optimism, encouragement and power - thank you so much for reminding me of what I can do! I often look back at my idyllic childhood and wish I could recapture the spirit - you have told me I can do this; I know I can do this. You have a wonderful gift, billy, a tremendous power which reaches out to people and reminds them of what they are and what they can be inside. This brought tears to my eyes. I'll think of your encouragement when I'm trying to soar and I WILL succeed. Have a great day! Ann
