Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

Updated on March 14, 2017

Cyst on the Left and Ovary on the Right

What is an Ovarian Cyst

An Ovarian cyst is a small fluid-filled sac that develops in a woman's ovaries women of any age can be affected by them. The cause of the cyst is when a follicle fails to rupture and release the egg, the fluid could remain and form a cyst in the ovary. It is quite common for it to normally happen in one of the ovaries. Many cysts are (functional) meaning it has nothing to do with the disease of any type and others are (benign) meaning non-cancerous which can disappear within a few weeks.

Ovarian Cyst Causes

Causes of Ovarian Cysts

There are several causes that can lead but not limited to Ovarian Cysts.

1. The Early menstrual cycle before 12 years of age.

2. Irregular menstrual cycles with continual skipping each month.

3. Hypothyroidism can aid in the creation of Ovarian Cysts.

4. Non-conception and infertility.

Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your gynecologist or physician. Request an ultrasound.

1. Pelvic pain after sexual intercourse or exercise.

2. Irregular menstrual cycles are not normal. Seek a physician if it becomes a pattern.

3. Feeling of lower pressure or fullness.

5. Vaginal spotting or pain.

6. Nausea or Vomiting.

When To Seek A Physician

If you have had or are having any of these please make an appointment to see your Doctor.

1. Fainting

2. Persistent Fever

3. Anemia (from loss of blood)

4. Increased facial hair

5. Unexplained Weight Loss

6. Excessive thirst or urination

7. Abdominal tenderness

A handful of reasons to seek a Physician. An Ovarian Cyst cannot cause a miscarriage but many others possibilities could. He/she will advise and take the step necessary to eliminate the issue. He may choose to prescribe medication or may decide on surgery, whatever he/she decides will be the right decision for you.

And there are no sign of bleeding as I don't get my period due to the injection.

Hi there, I'm planning to go to the doctor but I just wanted some advice before hand. The sister who normally does my injections said that they could cause ovarian cysts. The lower part of my abdomen on both sides (sort of where my ovaries would be if you look at a diagram) feel enlarged almost like they going to pop at any time but I don't have any pain and my breasts have been sensitive as well. I was late for my injection in December and had unprotected sex (silly I know) so was worried I was pregnant. I did a test at 10 this morning which came out negative. I don't know if this would be symptoms of cysts or if the pregnancy test malfunctioned. Please help.

I started bleeding Tuesday the color and consistency is that of my normal period however its so light I don't need a pad. Is this from my cyst? I was told I have one on my right side about 4-4.5 cm. I have 3 kids and weve been ttc one more for a year now...is this from cysts? Will i ever get back to normal? Is there a chance well ever have another child?

Hello I have a cyst in my right overy. When I saw the doctor he told me it will go away by it self but now it hurst more often then befor. When I go to pee I feel a pain in my right side. Could this mean is getting worst?

Thanks for adding such an informative article.

I had a sonogram which showed that i have a cyst in my right ovary which is about 4.5 cm.

The pain has steadily gotten worse over the past few months. At first it was just frequent need to urinate and some pressure pain. But it is so much worse now and Ill be lucky if I have one day where I don't feel any symptoms at all. Some days I will have unbearable shooting pains from my lower abdomen on right side and in the vagina. It almost always hurts to urinate recently. Bladder and urethra pain are common. When the pain gets so bad, aleve and a heating pad can take the edge off but today I had to take off work and just laid in bed crying from pain.

I feel crazy because I am 26 years old and I know others who have had cysts and had no symptoms. My gyno doctor just says lets wait 6 weeks for another exam to see if it grows. They don't operate unless it is 6cm or more I believe. She is pretty abrupt though, and I don't know what to do about the pain in the meantime. I might start looking for another doctor and a second opinion.

Has anyone else experienced chronic pain like this, is it normal?

My periods have been on and off. Sometimes I'll get it twice in one month. Since I got off of depot, I've been bleeding a darker color of blood and will have sever back pains with really bad cramping. I still get pain when I'm moving around and pills don't help.

Kylie: Contact your gynecologist immediately. It may not be a cyst it could be an infection. Its important that you take time to care for yourself , especially if you are sexually active. Keep me updated and wishing you all of the best.

When a young woman becomes sexually active things happen sooner than later in their lives. Cysts are really nothing to mess with and can also burst and cause excruciating pain. Follow through with your doctor and also take time to speak to your mom about what is happening. Mother's can be a daughters best friend.

Sabrina, I would recommend contacting your gynecologist and see what else could be done. If the herbal medicine works for you, then I would suggest that you seek on-line to see if you can purchase the same product on-line for less.

Hi, I'm 17. I've got a very large lump about 10 cms in my lower left abdomen and its making me bloated, i have a constant dull pressure there and in the left hand side of my back. Its been there about 5 months. It started off small and has been increasing in size and pain. I cant sleep properly and when I sit down I have to sit in a certain position. I have pain during intercourse also. I've been to the doctors and have been referred as an emergency for a Pelvic and Transvaginal Examination tomorrow. I'm worried, more because its been called an "emergency" referral. The doctor says she thinks is an ovarian cyst, I'm scared that because its been there a while it'll be serious and they will have to operate and take out my ovary.

Also my cycle has changed, it used to be in the beginning of the month, now it is at the end. it used to only last about 5 days. the first 3 were heavy and the last 2 were light. now it is light, then really heavy and then just heavy and it lasts about a full week. I am sexually active but i have taken tests and they come back negetive. also after my period has stopped a couple days later i have clear discharge but there is still some blood in it. I don't know what is going on. anyone have any ideas?

I just have a question. I know the real way to know is going to the dr. But I had my period a week ago and it was really dark and almost looked old. I spotted off and on for two weeks which I never do. Two days during the morning it was a lil heavy but still not it's normally color. Now my Boobs are hurting like crazy. Just wondering if I would already be about to start again or if I may be prego and that's why my period was so weird last time.

Sistaroots: I would contact another GYN and get another opinion. Having pain during intercourse is a sign of Cervical cancer. Here are some of the symptoms and remember its your body.

      Bleeding during and after sex

      Abnormal Pap Smears

      Bleeding after intercourse

Period that last longer or is heavier than usual

Increased discharge that is not your normal period

      Spotting after your period

      Pelvic pain

Don't be over fearful sometimes it could be menopausal signs too. But please do contact another GYN and get another opinion. So many of us count on the same GYN we have had for years; but there are GYN's who are fresh as a doctor and their objective is to get to the bottom of things. Take a nice warm bubble bath, relax and find another. Don't prolong the pain. Voice your concerns with another GYN and find out what is going on with your body. :)

Keep me posted and I wish you all of the best. :)

I started having a dull, sharp pain in my lower left side, in February 2012. (and I mean very low)I ignored it because I had started swimming so I figured it was strained.

It got worse, and sharper, to the point I would double over. I had a colonoscopy and it was fine.

Then I got my period, and I had not had one in a whole year. (I am 50) I thought that was a cervical cancer symptom so I had a pap smear, and that was fine. My OBGYN is going to give me an ultra sound to see if she sees anything.

Since that appointment, the low, left pain is going down the inside of my left leg. (groin area)I am also getting the same pain near my gall bladder and over to the upper right side. I feel FULL all the time and I am so tired....exhausted every single day to the point I cannot type or read, and I could literally fall asleep anywhere. (like right now)

The last time I had sex (3 nights ago) it HURT, but only towards the lower left side, where this all began. I did not tell my husband because I do not want him to worry.

That NEVER happened before ever, having painful sex I mean.

These are a lot of symptoms and my OBGYN does not seem very concerned and the wait for this ultrasound is 3 weeks!

I am scared, and all I do is use the heating pad because I am allergic to ALL anti-inflammatories, which I read others did for some, not all of the symptoms I have, on another forum.

Does anyone have any idea if this sounds like cervical cancer?

Thanks for some advice or feedback.

DiannaO: Over the weekend weigh out the pros and cons of surgery. Also ask yourself, " Would I wish to continue on this painful journey?" Sometimes what we are not ready for is the answer to our prayers.

My sister had the same dilemma as you and after serious reconsideration she is happy she no longer has horrible cycles, pain and discomfort and she is 39. She has three children and she is happy that she is no longer suffering. She also takes hormonal replacement so she is a pretty happy camper. Just think about it seriously, your doctor's would not suggest it unless they knew it was absolutely necessary. I hope you feel so much better soon. :)

DiannaO: Due to all that has been happening with you, your cycles and your visits, I would recommend that you reconsider removal of the ovaries and uterus. They are not wishing to give you a hysterectomy because they are trying to be cruel, its to protect your health and also possibly end up with cancer. You are 36 and if you do not plan on having anymore children I would recommend again that you reconsider not just for you but for your family. You will feel so much better and they can provide you hormone replacement. Your life will be much more fulfilled and honestly more happy. :)

I've been dealing with ovarian cysts for almost 3 years. As it turns out, i have 3 at any given time, just waiting to explode. I have had 2 c-sections and an ablation because my periods were so heavy... ablation is a very bad idea. The cysts are extremely painful, which usually cause a visit to the E.R. because i can't walk. I was also diagnosed with endometriosis and adenomyosis due to the c-sections and ablation. My periods have been showing up every 12 days (i'm 36), and every other period, a cyst burst. Now, today i'm noticing a whole lot of pressure in my lower abdomen, going from one side to another. My doctos, both primary and Obgyn, keep bouncing me back and forth between them. Rather than some sort of pain management until i hit menopause, they would rather gut me like a fish and remove my ovaries and uterus... not happening! To say that cysts are painful, is completely understated. The pain from them can radiate to the most unexpected places. And i can't take birth control, so i'm made to suffer. I'm fairly certain that that's what's going on right now with the pressure, but i won't know for sure for a few hours yet.

I experienced very bad cramping and sharp pains in my lower abdomen 3 days ago, it lasted for about 8 hours off and on throughout the evening and night. The next day I was bloated with extreme pressure in my stomach that felt like gas pains but without any gas, and I gained 5 pounds within 2 days without any change in diet. I've taken milk of magnesia the past two days thinking it was just constipation but I am still bloated and 5 pounds heavier. My mom has had a history of ovarian cysts and thinks that maybe one ruptured but would that cause me to gain 5 pounds seemingly overnight? The pain has mostly gone and now I am just very bloated and uncomfortable, midol hasn't helped so I'm not quite sure what would. I would love any suggestions and thoughts whether this could be related to an ovarian cyst, thanks!

Hi I went on bc for about a month and a half and then stopped it. My dr said this bc should be good on getting prego soon. Well I'm 6 weeks late for my period but all prego test say negitive. Iv been getting a sharp pain in my right side and it sometimes makes my back hurt. It hurts so bad I sometimes have to throw up. Iv been checked for endometriosis and it said no. But I still haven't been able to get preg. I'm worried that I may not be able to ever have a baby but my dr keep telling me everything looks fine. Should I can them to do a fertility test or what?

Danie_O: Please see your doctor or go to urgent care. Nobody should be in that type of pain nor get a migraine. It could be multiple issues and a doctor can define and figure it out for you. Hope you feel better soon. :)

Laura: I would recommend switching doctors and getting a 2nd opinion. Many gynecologists can rule out the problems and assist you with feeling much better. You should not have to go through any pain or nausea when you are cycling each month. It could also be Endometrosis or a series of other signs, don't delay and find another doctor.

I just got a sudden unexpected period that caused me to be bed ridden. Worst pain I've ever had and no explanation. I was unable to eat without severe cramping and was even struggling to drink water. I have only just been able to eat a full meal today. I was severely bloated and heavy feeling with tenderness. I've had an ultrasound about 8 years ago looking for cysts and cleared but my period has become more erratic and sometimes I don't have it for up to 12 months. My doctor hasn't been helpful as of late and I'm not sure how worried I should be. Any help?

Lona: My recommendation is see your doctor. It could be just scar tissue healing after your C-section, or it could be several other things. Please call your doctor and let them know what is going on. Congratulations on your new arrival.

please can someone help me im desperate, i have been having repetitive bladder infections or what i thought it was for 4 years, however they have become even more frequent since xmas at least 2 to 3 a month went to my doctor today and they now think that it could be endrometris or an ovarian cyst, i am awaiting a scan, my symptons are:

      bloating off the stomach,

pain in what i thought was my appendix on the right hand side,

a feeling off constipation even though i am not,

      my breasts are sore,

      pain like glass when urinating,

      constant bouts off thrush,

clotting in my blood when it is my period,

as for intercourse i cannot even contemplate it this last few months with my husband as it is so painful.

did anyone else have this problem and does anyone think that it is an ovarian cyst i am at my wits end and agony doesnt come close too describe the pain at the minute wud appreciate if someone cud get back too me, i started my periods when i was 9 and they have always been regular i was on the pill for 9 years and have been having a break from the pill the last year, i am 30 years off age with no children

Thank you for this site. I just turned 50 and going thru peri-menopausal, so heaving bleeding isnt to unfamiliar to me. However, I started my period four days ago, I am having the worst cramps ever,it hurst just to sit, very heavy period with clots. Bloated, constipated, pain when I go to the restroom. I am scheduled for a sonogram tomorrow. My question can they do a sonogram when on such a heavy period?

I did put up with it for a few years. It wasn't until I was in the Army and working in the troop clinic that a friend shoved me into one of the doc's offices to ask him about it. He didn't catch that it was a cyst issue, but the regime he put me on just happened to be the same one had I been properly diagnosed. It wasn't until a couple years ago I found out what the actual issue is. I definitely love that you are spreading awareness through this hub. There's so many of us who go on either thinking we are just "unlucky" with our menstrual cycles or that there is no answer. Thanks again for sharing! :)

Great hub, AEvans! After years of going through the pain and discomfort of Mr. Cyst, I finally learned ovarian cysts were the answer. It was only after my cousin had the US and was diagnosed that we realized we were going through the same thing. I spoke with my doc and she confirmed it. Knowing is half the battle and now I can reduce the problem instead of curling up and crying from the pain when my period comes 'round. Life has become considerably more productive. :) I hope this hub helps other women who have or are going through the same thing to get checked out and find a way to help reduce the effects. Voted up and shared!

Hi, for the past year I have been spotting between periods for 1-2 weeks, every period. Other than this development, my periods are completely normal. Always on time, never miss a period, always 4-6 days. Between my last period and the one I'm on now, I was spotting heavy for four weeks and bled right into my next cycle. Could this be a cyst? Is this something to worry about? I'm 19 years old.

Great Hub! I have a Complex cyst with 3 thin septations that just a month ago was 4cm and Thankfully just last week my ultrasound has shown that it has shrunk to almost 2cm!! This was great news, for Cancer does not shrink(so my doctor says) YAY! Now, To give some history here... I have the Mirena in place for over a year now, to stop me from bleeding all together. Not for Birth Control,(husband had vasectomy). That has worked Great! And I have not had ANY issues with the Mirena! Now this doctor put me on Lo Loestral FE to Help stop my ovaries from producing these Complex cysts(and continue to shrink the one I have) and cysts all together. Is it safe to be on the pill AND the Mirena at the same time? Thanks in advance for your time:)

hi, well i posted a month ago because they found a 4cm complex cyst on my left ovary and said my right ovary looked polycystic..well i went for a scan today, its been 3 months since last scan in dec 2011. my results were everything is normal, my ovarys look normal and there appears to be no cyst any more and both my ovaries dont look polycystic, everything is normal, im amazed & re-leaved & happy as i thought the cyst could still be there and that i might have poly-cystic ovaries but i dont..the cyst i had on my ovary was a complex 4 cm cyst, its gone, i just want to jump for joy, so i thought i would update. thanks

Lalita: It could be a combination of factors. Atrophic Vaginitis because your estrogen levels are low which happens with menopausal women. Inflammation of the vaginal wall which is most common in younger women. Trichomanisis, polyps, abnormal growths, STD's or even cancer. I would recommend that you make an appointment with your gyno ASAP and let them know what is going on so they can run some tests. Wishing you all of the best!

You realize that "Hyperthyroid" means a thyroid that's faster than normal, right? I'm not sure whether you need to change the "faster" part, or the "hyper" to "hypo" to correlate with the information on slowness, but your information's making me a little nervous.

Remember to tell them about the scan and have them run a second set of tests, which will determine what is happening. Please update and do not fear a second or even third opinion before venturing into have a fallopian tube removed.

hi, this is a quick update. i went to the gyne yesterday about a cyst on my left ovary.. he thinks i dont have a cyst on my left ovary, he thinks that its my left fallopian tube that is causing me the pain on one side, i previously had an ectopic pregnancy in that tube about 5 years ago and they never took my tube out, they just drained the baby out and stitched it back up..the gyne thinks i have a build up of scar tissue in my left fallopian tube, he wants to remove my tube..im not 100% comfortable with this because i dont see how the scan women picked up a 4cm complex cyst on my left ovary and she got it wrong and its not a cyst its my fallopian tube.. im so confused how someone can get that wrong when they do these scans everyday.. plz some1 any advice????

There are many things that may complicate conception. The Depo shot can delay pregnancy to. Research the side effects and longevity with Depo and try not to worry. Talk with your Gyno and explain your concerns with conception. Depo injections can last a few years. Enjoy your little one and just prepare for when you have another. Don't give up, but like I said talk with your Gyno. Keep us posted.

      Hello

I am a 22 year old female who was diagnosed with a 5cm ovarian cyst on my left ovary.

It all started on Jan 6th 2012. I had finished my period cycle early (started dec 29th ended Jan 2nd), this was quiet unusual since regularly my periods last about 7 days exactly. I have been relatively regular with my periods since i got them when i was 13.

However, on Jan 6th i woke up with a bloating feeling and also severely constipated! This happened to me once before so i decided to pay close attention to my fiber intake. On saturday night I was in excruciating pain. It felt like my muscles in my uterus were contracting (kind of like period cramps but a lot worse). I could not lay down or sit up i had to stand. I went to the ER they did an x ray to find a lot of stool (sorry for the details!). The doctor said he would still like me to come for an ultrasound. So i concluded that maybe my constipation was more serious then i thought, but why the vaginal cramping? These cramps continued for about 3 days and they would come and go). I took laxatives and it helped with my bowel movement.

I had a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound done and it found nothing but a polyp in my uterus about 1.6 cm.

After the 11th the cramp had subsided but my family doctor suggested i do a CT scan of the abdominal area. The CT scan showed a 5 cm cyst on my left ovary. Now i am unaware of it being functional or non-functional or what kind of cyst it is (which troubles me). My doctor referred me to a GYN. I have that appointment coming up early next week thankfully. In addition to all of this I was also reported having a UTI, which is a recurring problem for me so i am on antibiotics for that.

I just began my periods 2 days ago and they have so far been extremely heavy, with blood clots ranging from quarter to a lot bigger. I have never had blood clots in all my life! I am not in pain but i feel pressure in my mid back section as well as my left side from mid rib to lower thigh. I am so worried. I have been in and out of ER and the doctors office multiple times for the past 3 weeks. I have never had these issues in my LIFE I am depressed and worried that this maybe something serious.

I searched up my symptoms this website popped up so i decided to make an account.
