High blood pressure or hypertension is suffered by a good number of people, but a particular reason is not there to identify as the cause for this disease. That is why hypertension is also called as ‘silent killer’. It can lead to stroke which can make you fully or partially paralyzed for the rest of the life. Heart attack due to BP is also not very uncommon.

When plaques develop in the passage of the arteries, they will become narrower and this affects the natural flow of blood. Any thickening or stiffening of the artery will cause more pressure against the walls of that artery causing high blood pressure.

Age can be a reason for the attack of high blood pressure. Other factors that contribute to the origin of this disease are overweight, unbalanced diet, family history and race, lack of exercise, smoking etc. Most of the men have an increased chance of having high BP before the age 55 and in the case of women, their risk is after the menopause.

Medicines are available to control high BP, but you have to use these medicines throughout your lifetime, if you are depending only on drugs for the control of high BP. This is not a good practice to depend on drugs only because long term use of these medicines will have many other side effects.

  • Processed food may contain many harmful substances to your body including large amount of salt. As a common practice, lessening salt intake is a must to lower high BP. So it is better to avoid processed foods and junk foods completely from your diet.
  • Consume milk only in low quantities, but you can have other dairy products such as kefir and yogurt without much problem.
  • ‘Garlic’ is a good herb that have the capacity to control high blood pressure, cholesterol level etc. Include garlic in your diet.
  • ‘Kelp’ is a kind of seaweed and it can be used as a substitute of salt for the people with high blood pressure. Fruits and vegetables are to be included in more quantities in your diet.

It will be a better practice to keep a diary about the foods you are eating presently. Update it and watch it regularly to make the appropriate changes as per the need, for lowering your blood pressure to normal standard.


Alcohol intake should be controlled to get your high BP to a lower level. If you are a not using alcohol regularly, do not start to use it and if you are a regular user limit it to one or two pegs daily. A better practice is to consume two pegs daily for adults below 65 and one peg for those who are above 65, if you have high BP.


If you have excess weight, start helpful programs to reduce your weight. Losing at least 10 pounds will lower your blood pressure rate. Watch your waistline and keep it below the average because hypertension is common in men whose waist is over 40 inches and in women whose waist is over 35 inches.

If you are very active in doing exercises, you can bring down the blood pressure in a few weeks. Regular exercise of 30 to 60 minutes for at least five days a week can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 mm Hg. Doing exercises to increase the flexibility of the muscles and it will keep your arteries form clogging the blood flow. The better choice of the type of exercise is yoga asanas, for getting more stretch and strength for the various muscles groups.

Stress and tension is suffered by everybody as a part of the day to day life. For some people small problems or worries will result into great stress. The reasons for stress suffering may be different but not having any solution for the stresses and tensions for a considerable period will increase your blood pressure.

Chronic stress which you are suffering for a long period is more harmful. So stress management has high importance in blood pressure control. For this purpose you can use the help of counselor. Another best method is fro stress management is to practice yoga asanas regularly. Yoga is helpful in reducing stress, obesity, high blood sugar, low HDL and waist circumference.


Monitor your blood pressure regularly and keep a pressure chart. This will help you to know about the results of your efforts and you can do the necessary changes also per the need arises.



Getting good sleep is also necessary to lower blood pressure. Practice good sleep hygiene by sleeping regularly on the same time every day, by keeping your bedroom in a better condition to get good sleep and by avoiding sleep disturbing factors such as drinking tea/coffee, physical activities, TV shows etc. immediately before going to sleep.

High blood pressure can be controlled successfully if you have enough will power to adapt some changes in your present lifestyle. Getting medical help continuously for the rest of your life is not advisable. Small sacrifices that you have to do by changing your lifestyles are worth when it compared to the adverse effects of the long term use of drugs. To avoid more complications in future, practice some effective high blood pressure home remedies to lower the blood pressure by changing your present life style in consultation with your doctor.

      Garlic is helpful to regularize blood pressure and cholesterol etc. But it is not a complete medicine for the disease. Combine the various possibilities such as diet control, yoga or any other type of exercise, stress management etc. in consultation with your physician for getting any positive result.       my dad has hbp, irregular heartbeat and ringing in the ear. So, he is having a hard time to regulate all the medicines. He had garlic but not good for his ringing.
