The Top Five Best Portable Tens Units

Updated on July 27, 2010

The use of TENS units to deal with chronic pain is becoming more and more popular as people look for non-drug ways to address their pain. A tens unit can also be used to stimulate muscles and restore tone, for instance after injury. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and works by applying a small, painless current to the skin which blocks pain signals from reaching the brain. When used to stimulate the muscles a different EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulation) is used. Some units can be used for both TENS and EMS and some for one or the other. We've looked at some of the bestselling TENS units and the reviews of actual users to find the best value, most effective units on the market today.

I like my pain-less ems unit. I get really bad muscle spasms in my lower back and it helps relax them so I can still go to work. Plus it helps with my headaches. I thought for sure it would be on this list. :-(

is there an AC adapter that I can purchase anywhere that can be used on the LG-7000 TENS?

My only biggest important critic with the design of the LG-7000 Digital TENS professional unit is that it lacks an electric adapter plugin for those who opt to use the TENS at Home or elsewhere. Consumers desiring these machines to aid and ward off pain don't wan't to be worried about recharging 9 volt batt everytime. That's an inconvience. This to me is the biggest downfall of cheaper TENS machines. Other than that, this pro TENS unit lives up to its specs.

I recently purchased a new TOP Tens unit from Roscoe Medical. I did not have a prescription and wanted to make sure to get a great product without a script. This unit is amazing!

It is easy to use, simple instructions and great packaging. Best thing is that it is a standard TENS unit meaning all standard electrodes and lead wires fit it. My doctor told me it is the TENS 7000 basically which is one of the best units out there!

I went to PT for the 2nd time today-I was first in traction than had the TENS on my lower back- WiTouch. I liked the 4 pad model with up & down buttons vs this WiTouch. Either way, I'm sold on the idea of a TENS being used on my lower back for a ruptured disc-which I will not have surgery on.=Scares the heck out of me.

I'm going to buy the 4 pad model for my home use, because I get a lot of restless leg movement and can't sleep thru the night.

Nice catch on Body Clock TENS. I did not realise the inner parts issue. I am from the UK, In the UK, we call them 'tens machines' :) I got my body clock TENS from - I think is a bit far for us on this side of the pond :)

Smart TENS is the one I have - I love it.

I cannot believe you missed Body Clock TENS Units off the list. I bought mine from - I wanted to know how comes their units felt much smoother than other units I had used. So I investigated. The units come from the UK and they are manufactured using superior inner parts. Not sure I understand all the technical stuff, but its the quality of the metal, electrical mechanisms etc inside. It creates a smoother feeling on the skin.

The units are very popular in Europe. Cost a little more but worth it. Just my view, take it or leave it.

      To Mark Franklin,

Can you please expand on why you feel these are the worst designed devices, and possibly offer better alternatives, with the reasons they are better? Just saying something is bad doesn't help much for someone to make a better informed decision.

I am sorry to bust your bubble. I Have the LG8 TM unit and that one works great. So I taught I give the LGMed Quad 4-1 a try. First of all, The screen with the blue back-lit and black lettering is almost unreadable. Just the minutes are readable. All other setting are in such small letters on the blue back-lit, you can just see something blinking. That's it. True, I just had eye surgery but for that part the LG8 was excellent and no problem to adjust. The Quad, has no real programmed settings like the LG8 ( I needed Mode EMS Asynchronous). you have to setup the Quad for every setting yourself. I had to do it under the magnifying glass. After it was setup it felt a bit softer then the LG8 but it was OK, except, after 6 hours the battery was dead. I taught this was just an old battery, sorry, same happen with a new battery. I send a e-mail and was told the Quad would not last longer then 6 to 9 hrs in EMS mode and 20 minutes in inferential mode. LG8 lasted 4 days in EMS mode on battery. Who wants to walk around with a extension cord.

I needed the LG8 24/7 for that week and it was great, no back-pain, it worked. I guess the Quad would work too, except you would have to plug it in. (110Volt). I am returning it, unfortunately with a 20% restocking fee.

Sure, some work better than others. That's why you look at reviews before you buy. I've found some pretty good info on the blog at htp://

I agree with Ck. It works very well. You can carry the portable tens machines with ease and use anywhere. This means you can treat pain even when you are away from home or at work.

I've had TENS therapy at my chiropractor's office and just used one of these listed for home use. The home use machine I used worked very well.
