The Wonder Mangroves

Updated on June 18, 2010

Few places in the Philippines take part in answering the global message: Save our Seas. I’m so proud that in our place, there is this so called sanctuary area. I can really see how it benefited the people in our place, benefits due to declaring the specific part of our sea as protected area. Fishes are now abundant compared before. Thanks to the hundreds of mangroves that are planted in the protected area for being responsible for these.

Mangroves are very important to fishes and other sea creatures but also to human being.  For fishes it serves as their home but for human mangroves are more than that.

Mangroves Medicinal Uses

Mangrove plants are used in folklore medicine. Extracts from it have been proven to be effective in human and also animals. Many disorders have been reported that have been cured but only limited investigations have been carried out to identify the scientific explanations.

These are based from a traditional medicine used and developed over thousands of years. And until now, it has been used to treat common illnesses in a natural way.

These are some common illnesses which may be cured using some specie of mangroves

  • angina
  • asthma
  • backache
  • boils
  • constipation
  • convulsions
  • diarrhea
  • dyspepsia
  • elephantiasis
  • eye ailments
  • fever
  • fungal infections
  • headaches
  • hemorrhage
  • inflammation
  • jaundice
  • kidney stones
  • lesions
  • malaria
  • malignancies
  • rheumatism
  • snakebites
  • sores
  • sore throat
  • syphilis
  • toothache
  • tuberculosis
  • ulcers

It's so amazing how these tress can bring good things to us. Aside from protecting our fishes and our shores, its also brought us a natural way of treating our illnesses.

If people won’t be responsible enough to take part taking care with these tress, the next generation will not be able to see and savor the good things that these trees can bring.

I hope Florida's mangroves will not be adversely affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico like the marshes are starting to be in Louisianna. This is going to be so devastating to the wildlife as well as people's fishermen, for instance. So very sad!

borge - never realized it before but south Florida has a lot in common with the mangroves in the Philippines. Much of our sturctures today - condos, apartment and commercial buildings, and homes are built in what formerly were mangrove swamps. Thanks for the info.

I knew that mangroves were good for the environment but had no idea that so many medicinal uses came from them. Thanks for an informative hub.
