Vitamin B6 And My Painful Cracked Lips

Updated on November 16, 2012

Why Vitamin B6

Listen up...if you are wondering why you should be taking Vitamin B6 then you should continue reading this article. Vitamin B6 is an essential supplement that you should be taking. The best form is in its natural form. Foods with vitamin B6 are listed near the end of the hub.

My Cracked Lip Story

For the longest time I had been experiencing painful cracked lips. The crack was right in the side of the lip not the fleshy part of the lip itself. I could not figure out why the inside of my lip would crack when I opened my mouth. Sometimes it bleed, and yes it's painful. I would put vaseline on the crack thinking maybe it's from dryness.

I had this problem of cracked lips on and off over a period of approximately three years. The problem still re-occurred at the time of writing this hub. If you take a look at the picture you will see the tiny crack, yes I know it's not a pretty sight. (LOL)

I wondered if it was a vitamin deficiency, but did nothing to find out if it was. I just happened to be watching Dr. Oz which I normally do not watch his program. However, this particular day the TV was on that channel, and he was on. The show was excellent he had so many tips on power foods so you know I was sucked in, and I was working on the computer, and trying to listen to what he was saying. Suddenly he started talking about cracked lips, and someone from the audience came on stage to show their cracked lip to the viewers at home. I said yep that's what my lip looks like! According to Dr. Oz the body has a vitamin B6 deficiency.

Naturally Getting Your B6

As you can see from the picture there is a crack in the side of my lip. Yep, it looks small, but guess what it hurts. Ever had a paper cut? Paper cuts are tiny, but they hurt. Well I kept having this re-occuring crack in the sides of my mouth, and did not have a clue to what was wrong. It was so annonying to have this problem, and I wonder why I never asked my doctor regarding this situaltion.

Inflammation and B6

On significant sign of the body not in taking enough vitamin B6 is the production of inflammation in the body. Not enough B6 has been noted as one of the reasons for the body produces inflammation. Other factors why the body produces inflammation are; stress, lack of exercise, allergies to food, poor diet, (eating to much refined sugar, flour). Reading up on Vitamin B6 and inflammation is a bit shocking to find out that something as simple as getting the right amount of B6, and vitamin D will reduce the production of inflammation in the body. Other key points to living a healthy lifestyle and reduces inflammation from your body is to include in your diet; high fiber foods, healthy fats, take probiotics (for healthy digestion), eat sardines, avocadoes, and/or salmon.

Sources for Vitamin B6

Getting your vitamin B6 is as easy as adding a banana to your diet, but here are some other foods that are rich in vitamin B6:

Great Vitamin B6 Foods

  • Avocados
  • Carrots
  • Lentils
  • Brown Rice
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Tuna
  • Shrimp
  • Wheat Germ

As I was researching, and reading a variety of articles on cracked lips I took note to a piece of information on dehydration. Not drinking enough water is another factor that can play a big part in many ails of the body including cracked or peeling lips. The hydration of the body is important to keep the cells cleansed, and hydrated. Each cell in the human body needs water for healthy survival. Eventual the body will start to deteriorate after long period of not intaking enough water. I have heard people say "I do not like driking water because it does not have any taste." Today that is not an excuse not to drink water; there are so many choices as far as flavored water. Is flavored water the best choice? I do not think so. Some water is better than no water. Drink to your health, and hydrate your body, lips and skin with water.
