Living Better With Diabetes

Having diabetes means that your body body may not make enough of a hormone called insulin, or your body may not use insulin properly. Insulin helps your body use sugar from your food as energy or store it for later use. When this doesn't happen, too much sugar stays in your blood.

Over time, high blood sugar can lead to serious problems.

It can harm your eyes, nerves and kidneys.

It can damage your blood vessels, leading to heart disease and stroke.

It can reduce blood flow to parts of your body, especially your feet. This can cause pain and slow down healing. You may ask how can you prevent these problems. What can you do to keep them from getting worse if you already have one or more of these problems. Here is a list of the most important things you can do.

1. Be sure to always take your diabetes medication.

2. Check your blood sugar as often as your health care provider asks you to.

3. Be sure that you eat healthy balanced meals and snacks.

4. Try to exercise as often as you can. Walking is the perfect low impact exercise.

5. Try your best to reach a healthy weight and try to stay at that weight.

6. Be sure to see your health care provider as often as your supposed to.

7. If you smoke, quit. This will reduce the risk of damage to your blood vessels.

Check Your Blood Sugar

You may not like having to check your blood sugar and keep track of the results over time. But it really can help to keep your diabetes under control.

Checking how your blood sugar rises or falls in response to certain foods, exercise, and other things can help you reduce symptoms and help to prevent blood sugar emergencies.

Having a record of your blood sugar over time can help you and your health care provider know how well your treatment is working and whether you need to make changes. Simply put you have a better chance of keeping your blood sugar in a target range if you know what it is from day to day. Controlling your blood sugar will make you feel better and will slow down the long term damage to your eyes, kidneys, and heart. All of these can be damaged if your blood sugar is not controlled.

Outstanding and informative hub - I like the many facts you present here, and the tips for helping to lower blood sugar. Now you have me curious about creating a recipe that would use the maximum number of food items you mentioned. Hmmm - not sure how I would combine avocados and cinnamon. But then, I would never have thought of salted caramel recipes, and those are all the rage right now!

I’ll have to try the apple cider vinegar suggestion, but most definitely will have to mix it with something. I have used it to relieve acid reflux and it works great for that but taking it straight is a real shock to the pallet. I regularly drink the green smoothie but slightly different than your recipe. I replace the strawberries with fresh pineapple which is high in fiber but also scores high in the glycemic index.

I guess the best practice is to be consistent with the diet. This is especially important to us diabetics because as we become balanced with our sugar levels, it is very easy to stray and the resulting symptoms are almost immediate. At least in my experience. I’m under control now... started off taking insulin injections but with a good diet and exercise I am now on a low dosage of Glucophage. The dosage is so low that I only have to take it once or twice a week, instead of 2 times a day when I first started. Every body is different so my experience is certainly different than other diabetics.

Wow. You sure pack lots of helpful information in this hub! Since I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I have been only as high as borderline, so I have not been prescribed a medication, but I know that I could use to exercise more. Just planted our veggie garden...and in the summer I usually eat more healthfully because I grow our food. :0) Thanks for the tip about the vinegar. Will try this, too.
