How I keep in shape by walking

Updated on June 19, 2013

Walking is the easiest exercise I can do.

To achieve my goal I am persistent and motivated. I usually try to fit in an hours walk 2 to 3 times a week. It is an easy way to get healthy, without too much commitment. I make it enjoyable if I can, because this ensures that in the future I will stick to this program. One way to make it worthwhile for me is to bring along my music player, and use the beat to pace myself. However, I am careful not to overdo this because I feel it can divert from my purpose. I will leave one way and find a different route to return sometimes. As a reward to myself, I will have a small snack when I return home, such as a 6 ounce glass of juice or a piece of toast.

The point of having an exercise log is so that I can keep track of my progress. I have heard that 10,000 steps is an attainable goal where my body can feel the plateau. If I can reach this mark I am able to notice a difference. I estimate that 10,000 steps is about 2 miles. If I walk an average of 3 miles per hour, then I would say that 40-50 minutes is about 2 miles. However, I have heard that the reason people have turned to speed walking is that it will stimulate the cardiovascular system more to a point where I can see results. Otherwise known as power walking, this is done by holding the arms closer in towards the torso, enabling more blood to constrict away from the extremities and flow towards the heart. It does not do to much good to walk around for a little while and not realize any gain.

As a very important footnote, whenever starting an exercise program, the thing I stress most is to check with a doctor first and have your program approved. Also, I do not worry as much about my weight, as how I feel and look in general.
