What is humanity

One of the most wonderful characteristics of man is humanity. When you show concern for others, there is an inner glow within you that makes you happy and fulfilled. In today’s world there is a mad rush towards money and on the way to acquire it you trample love and concern for others, as your mind is only after materialistic success. But your happiness in acquiring this materialistic success will be only skin deep. Show concern, love and affection towards others and watch your life change into a haven of happiness and fulfillment

The other day, I was walking in the street when I saw a car rush by and its door was not properly closed. A young man who was riding a bike overtook the car and informed the driver that the door was open. I thought it was a wonderful act of humanity. The young man could have ignored the negligence of the car driver but his concern for human life made him warn the driver. See, this is all humanity all about.

Care for animals is also part of humanity. Treat your pets as a family member. It gives so much of love and loyalty back. Looking after your neighbor’s pet when they are away on a vacation is also an act of humanity. Feed stray dogs and other animals as this also has a stamp of humanity. Teach your children to love animals when they are very young, so that this characteristic of concern for animals gets embedded in their young mind.

Treating your wife as your better half, respecting her inner feelings, giving the love and affection due to her is also humane.

Show concern when she is sick. Share her work; appreciate her cooking, shower her with your love. The same applies to the wife also. She should show the same love she expects from her husband. Their world of love and affection should encompass their children with emotional security and well-being.

You might well ask why I should include the relationship between husband and wife as an act of humanity. Well, the relationship between husband and wife in this modern world has become mechanical, devoid of true love. With an increasing need of both husband and wife to go for work, they feel drained and exhausted that they do not have time enough to be expressive in their love.

Love and respect your parents in their old age. The increase in old age homes shows the pathetic life of the parents who had brought up their children with so much of care. It is a complete lack of humanity on the part of children to ignore them. Parent’s blessings are like nectar of life.

God loves those who are humane and they are His blessed ones. The fulfillment you feel through being humane molds your character and your actions of humanity leads you to the path of great happiness and divinity. As in Mahatma Gandhi’s words,

‘You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of ocean are dirty, the ocean itself does not become dirty’.
