What's Therapy Like?

Updated on July 6, 2019

What is Therapy

Therapy is a treatment of a psychological disorder, where you talk to someone about how you feel. Deciding to go to therapy is taking the right step to getting help. It does not mean you are weak if anything you are strong for getting the help you deserve. A therapist will teach how to deal with your emotions in a healthy way. A lot of people say that only crazy people go to shrinks or they don't do anything. That is far from true. First of all, you are not crazy for going to a therapist. Second of all, the therapist does help a lot more than you think. Many people enjoy therapy because they are able to talk to someone and get their feelings out. It may take some time to really open up to your therapist but in due time you will.

"You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,

love like you'll never be hurt,

sing like there's nobody listening,

and live like its heaven on Earth."

— William W. Purkey

How do I talk to a therapist?

Like any normal person. The only difference is this is their profession. They may be able to help you better than anyone. When talking to your therapist make sure to get out everything. When doing so, your therapist will be more likely to help you. If you get stuck on what to say then ask yourself why you came to the therapist in the first place. You don't necessarily have to tell your therapist everything, but the more you tell them, the better they will be able to help you. I am no medical professional. I speak simply from personal experiences.

"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken."

— Oscar Wilde

I'm scared

It's okay to be scared. Everyone gets that way sometimes. The first time I went to the therapist I was scared and nervous because I did not know what all questions they would ask and I did not know exactly what to say. I was also scared to open up. It had been so long since I had opened up to anyone. You may not get everything out on the first day of communicating with your therapist. It takes time to build a trusting connection with your therapist. What you say to your therapist stays between the two of you. Your therapist is not allowed to tell anyone what you have told them. Don't feel ashamed to tell your therapist everything. A therapist will never judge you, they are only there to help you.

"Be the change that you wish to see in the world."

— Mahatma Gandhi

What if I don't like therapy

If you don't think therapy is right for you, then you can quit any time you would like. Nobody is going to stop you. If you do not think therapy is helping you in any way then there is absolutely no reason for you to be there. But, do not give up hope because there are different therapies for everyone. You may find that you like a different type of therapy. Counseling, group therapy, church therapy, or etc. There are many to choose from. Also, if you are not quite getting a connection with your therapist, you could either try another therapist or talk to a friend or family member that you trust. Just remember it takes time to build a connection, it is not going to happen overnight. When I first went to the therapist, it seemed as if she did not care about what I was going through, so I decided to switch the therapist. It took 3 different therapists until I found the right one for me. It could take you longer or not as long to find the right one. Don't give up and just keep looking, or as Dory off Finding Nemo once said, "Just keep swimming."

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."

— Marilyn Monroe

How do I know if I need therapy?

Have you been through something traumatic?

Do you think or know you have a mental illness?

Are you going through something stressful with a current or past relationship?

Have you become distant from everyone?

Are you depressed?

Do you have anxiety attacks or panic attacks?

Did you answer yes to one or more of these questions? If so, then you are a candidate for therapy. You will never know how helpful therapy can be until you try for yourself. A saying I have heard many times is, Don't knock it until you try it." Therapy can be used as an alternative for medication is some occasions. Not everyone needs therapy, but if you are contemplating on it, then you may want to give it a try and see how you like it.

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

— Oscar Wilde

Take the first step

This will be your first step to changing your life around. Most people think others will portray them as weak. Do not ever think you are weak for getting help. You are not weak. You are so strong for getting the help you deserve to change your life around for the better. Sometimes you need to put yourself first. This does not mean you are conceited, instead, it means that you want to better yourself in order to take care of others.

"Life isn't about feeling yourself. Life is about creating yourself."

— George Bernard Shaw
