Why Waste Time With Self Pity?

Updated on March 19, 2010

Though It Might Feel Like Your Life Has Been Ruined

95% of my personal belongings and my entire Adrift Art Studio was scraped up and loaded into a dumpster just about a week ago.
95% of my personal belongings and my entire Adrift Art Studio was scraped up and loaded into a dumpster just about a week ago.

Faith Will Carry You Through

I did not have a hair brush, most of my clothes were ruined, all of the artwork I was working on destroyed, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. We waited four days before we could take any kind of action to start restoring what was left. The waiting was the worst thing. On the fourth day I could not wait idle any longer. I woke up in a bad mood but quickly realized that my need to fight back was the culprit defining my emotions.

I decided to go into survival mode. That called for a plan of action. Sulking around was not going to make me feel any better and waiting for FEMA, the Town Of Munster, or any other human was not going to work for me. I had a very private consultation with my Maker. The result of that talk left me remembering I had not lost everything. I still had the LOVE. This one thought has been my motivation and salvation. I was good to go. Faith in what I know in my heart, that is all that mattered now. Everything else would come in it's own time. It is all about the LOVE.

Love Will Hold It's Own

Tears were shed as my sister tried to salvage what she could from Mother's family photos.

Good friends will stand by your side and do all they can to help.
Good friends will stand by your side and do all they can to help.

Attitude Is Everything

When the dust settles and the water recedes, as in my case, you have to grab your butt with both hands and jump in running. There is no time for feeling sorry for yourself. A lot of people in this world are going through some sort of terrible ordeal as I type this HubPage. They are alone in one way of looking at it. Yet, with a closer view they are not. Ups and downs, rocky roads, and chaos are a real part of living and survival. Sure it is bad. Yes it is hard. You can bet your sweet rear that it is painful and ugly to boot. The thing is, life holds few guarantees. One guarantee that I am sure of is LIFE IS HARD.The only thing to do is screw your head on as straight as possible and start picking up the pieces. Time is all we really have and wasting it on self-centered emotions is not healthy.

It Does Not Matter What Your Plight

Loss of a job, a loved one, your home, a pet, a baseball game. It does not matter what is bringing you down. The solution is easy. Pick yourself up and brush your self off and remember your FAITH. Count your blessings and then carry on. Do something positive, no matter how small. Help somebody in need. Talk to a friend or counselor. Getting advice or reading a self-help book can do wonders. The main thing is to stay positive and take actions to make your situation better. Attitude is everything and actions speak louder than words. Just go for it and it will all work out before you know it.

You and I sound so much alike...I don't know if you are religious or not, but I have a saying-"The will of God will never lead you, where the grace of God cannot keep you".This saying has sustained me through many upheavals in my life. Just when I think I can take no more, here "more" comes...As a result, I have become stronger than I ever thought possible for me. I feel as though you and I may be more than a little alike.Perhaps we share a kinship of the spirit...

      Great and heartbreaking hub.

I also applaud your faith - i know how important it is. but i do also want to say, to anyone who might be 'depressed' over some loss - it's ok to grieve! it's normal to feel sadness over a loss and take some time to reflect on the value of what we once had, to think about and enjoy what it meant to us at one time. the grieving process takes time and won't go away because we are 'busy'. i believe we need to acknowledge our feelings in order to move past them. if we once had something that was dear and valuable, there is the promise within that knowing that we can also, one day in the future, have something dear and valuable again. all the more possible if what we once had was our own creation! we did it before, and we can do it again! Have faith - and Hope! God bless!

You have all been an inspiration to me during this period of recovery. The whole damn mess is frustrating and annoying. Having to deal with insurance companies, contractors, FEMA and the likes. It is enough to drive you NUTS or in my case,"TO SANITY" I like being crazy you see. Thank all of you so much. I hope to write about artwork and fishing very soon. I still have my dreams! C.S.

Everything well put- it makes what we see on the news more real and personal. Thank God you have the attitude of taking action- single most important thing to do when faced with tragedy. You are very inspiring for people facing any tragedy- no matter how big or small.

Good for you, C.S., for your inner strength. I know from experience it can be very difficult to be positive in the face of personal tragedy - many are unable to do this.

My heart goes out to you CS. But you have a great attitude. Stuff is only stuff, even important stuff not as important as family. Sulking doesn't get anything rebuilt.

Very touching. And we thought it was rough being without electric.  Anytime we think we have it bad, just look around somebody else has it worse.

We will be praying for you and your continued strength. ~ eddie

      SweetiePie,

The artwork was more painful to sweep up than much of the other belongings. I was working on an article for the HubPages and only had a little to finish before publication. That really bugged me but, it was not meant to be I guess. It will take some time to get a Studio going again as there is so much other stuff to restore like a furnace. Winter is coming soon! I too am thankful that so many articles were published as they are an excellent record of my work. Thank God for HubPages and folks like you. C.S.

Your attitude is very inspiring for someone who just lost everything. Hope I could feel the same way if I were in your place. It would be hard for sure, but as you said things are just things and we can alway acquire new things. Your art work is something I am sad though was destroyed, but I am glad you wrote about some of it here at HubPages so people will at least be able to see it.
