Benefits of Beetroot

Updated on April 14, 2014

Several Benefits of Beetroot

  1. A beetroot is a natural blood purifier and herbal detoxifier.
  2. Beetroot contains a variety of nutrients important for our immune system to help it work with high efficiency.
  3. Beets stimulate the production of antibodies that fight against several infections inside our body.
  4. The white blood cells comprising phagocytes and leukocytes fight against several diseases from occurring in our body and beet helps these cells by providing a high level of nutritional support.
  5. Beetroot is rich in iron. It boosts our red blood cells with required iron and facilitates the supply of oxygen towards the cells making our body young and healthy.
  6. Beetroot contains manganese necessary for the formation of interferon that is a potent anticancer substance.
  7. The colour of beets is red because of the betanin pigment found in them. The betanin pigment is a prominent anthocyanin antioxidant which aids in preventing cancer and heart disease by killing free radicals in our body.
  8. Beetroot as a beneficial antioxidant provides better support and health for our kidneys and liver.
  9. Beetroot is high in fibre and good for our digestive system. As a fibrous food, it helps absorb all the acidic and fatty foods from our body and excretes them out of the human body.

Delicious beetroot with multiple health benefits
Delicious beetroot with multiple health benefits

Now it does not end here, as there are a lot of different benefits of beetroot which are discussed in the below sections:

Betroot can be eaten in salads just like onions, tomatoes and carrots. To revitalize your fatigued and tired body, it is highly recommended to eat beetroot in form of a salad on a daily basis.

As beetroot is low in calories, it also works as a laxative. Beetroots have a high content of vitamin C and pro-vitamin A. They are rich in folic acid, fibre, B vitamins such as vitamin B1, 2, 3 and 6. They are also rich in iodine, to a lesser extent magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. Beetroots are highly recommended for pregnant women to ease in the digestive process and revitalization of body during pregnancy.

Values of one cup of cooked beet:

  • 1.5 grams of protein

  • 1.5 grams of dietary fibre

  • 259 milligrams of potassium

  • 32 milligrams of phosphorus

  • 53.2 micrograms of folate

  • 8.5 grams of carbohydrates

Garden beet or a blood turnip or red beet is one of the most popular vegetables in gardens around the world. The neck of the beetroot or the leaves commonly known as sugar beet is an excellent source of vitamin A and the beet roots are a really good source of vitamin C.

The beetroot neck or leaves can be prepared as green vegetable recipes in the kitchen. The beet roots can be used in salads or can be cooked whole.

There are several more traditional and modern styles and ideas of cooking beets. You can easily find all the information regarding them by googling for ‘beetroot recipes.’

On an interesting note, beetroots can be microwaved, pickled, steamed, boiled, baked or eaten raw as already mentioned above.

Beetroots turn out to be very delicious when they are roasted in a hot oven as they contain much more natural sugar than starch. Roasted beets help in concentrating the sugar instead of converting it into liquid when cooked.

In India, people prepare a delicious traditional drink known as 'kanji' out of beetroots. It is a healthy drink loaded with Indian spices to spice up your love life.

Interestingly, beetroots can also be prepared to make thirst quenchers. Have you heard about beetroot juice or drink? No, then for your information, you can make a delicious and healthy juice with beetroots. I made these extremely delicious seven best homemade thirst quenchers with beetroots.

Nice writeup on Beetroot. Not one of my favorite vegetables but i do have beetroot juice in combination with carrots. Beetroot is associated with the root or base chakra which is responsible for our survival.

Thanks for adding up your expert knowledge on beetroot Anamika. Before you told me, I did not knew that the base chakra or root of beet is responsible for our survival, as I don't have any expertise in mantras, astrology, and spirituality.

Yesterday I ate some chicken in the afternoon and was feeling a little awkward in my stomach so at night I ate only beetroot as my meal and slept well. In the morning, when I woke up I was feeling fine after freshening up. Actually my stomach was fed up of fried food and needed fiber intake so I provided it with eating beetroot as a salad.

It's always interesting to see what foods can do to help naturally boost one's immune system. Another exciting find is elderberries. Recent clinical studies have proven that elderberry extract can boost immunity and help reduce the flu virus. Time and research will no doubt continue to find other beneficial foods to ward off illness.

Yes, I remember one day when I ate a lot of beets in form of salad. The other day when I freshened up I saw the color of bowel turned dark red and I got really horrified due to this. I thought that I have blood in stool and was planning to call my doctor when I remembered that I ate quite a few beets yesterday and that's why the color of bowels is dark red. It was so funny for my family. They all were laughing at me that how stupid I am.

I have been having beetroot, carrot, celery and ginger juice for quite awhile now. My doctor is so impressed with my B/P and cholesterol improvement, but huffed at the juice being a "miracle worker". After several months and everything improving so well he asked me for the juice recipe so he could pass it on to other patients with B/Pressure problems. Now I am hoping it will help my dearest friend who has just been diagnosed with Terminal cancer.

I wasn´t a fan of beetroot until recently, when I started eating it roasted or raw in salads, and now I absolutely love it. A couple of days ago I invented a “raw beetroot, tomato and red bell pepper salad” that was a huge hit and decided to make a Hub out of it. While looking for backlinks, I found your hub on beetroot and I included it using the anchor text “beetroot”. Hope you don´t mind and thanks for writing good quality, interesting and useful hubs that allow me to use Hubpages' backlinking tool :) The hub is called “grilled salmon with beetroot, tomato and red bell pepper salad”, using the anchor text ”tomato”, if you are interested in checking it out.

      Thanks again,

      Cheers!

Don't forget it comes in a convenient powder as well. I hate beets. But every morning I mix a couple tablespoons in a glass of water with some Vitamineral Greens. It doesn't taste great, but it's far from bad, and it's an easy way to down a lot of awesome veggies!

Is there a health advantage to drinking beet juice over, say, raw shredded beetroot? For example, does drinking beet juice aid in better production of nitric oxide?
