Best Pregnancy Workout DVDs

Updated on September 17, 2014

What are the best pregnancy workout DVDs?

The best pregnancy workout DVDs will be different for each woman according to fitness level, how far you are along in pregnancy and how tired or active you feel that day. I had a variety of DVDs that I did when I was pregnant, some gave quite a challenging workout, some were a cardio workout, some were great when I needed a quick workout, others were great for later on in my pregnancy when I focused on pilates and yoga.

The pregnancy workout DVDs below should cater for every need and are based on my own research and the DVDs I liked to do when I was pregnant. The first DVD featured is a strength training workout, which is great for those looking for something challenging. There are also lots of great cardio workout DVDs featured below that are suitable for pregnancy. The 10 minute pilates solution DVD is perfect for when you're short on time (this is a great one to fit in when you have a spare 10 minutes) and pilates is a great prenatal exercise. If you like yoga check out the yoga for your pregnancy DVD. If you've never tried yoga, pregnancy is a good time to start as there are lots of benefits for pregnant women some of which are explained further on in the article.

The best pregnancy DVD for you will also depend on your physical fitness and activity before you got pregnant. If you have done no physical exercise before pregnancy check out the walking DVDs at the end of the article. I do quite a lot of exercise and I found the walking DVDs are also great for when you are heavily pregnant even if you were active before pregnancy.

Read on to find out more about the best pregnancy workout DVDs.

The Best Pregnancy Workout DVD

The Perfect Pregnancy Workout, Vol. 1: Sculpting (2002 Release)
The Perfect Pregnancy Workout, Vol. 1: Sculpting (2002 Release)
Take it from me, this is quite a challenging strength training DVD. The instructor is a former Cirque de Soleil athlete, is 8 months pregnant and in excellent shape. There are options to make each exercise harder as you do the workout more and more. If you're looking for a challenging workout during pregnancy this could be the one for you. The video is a 43 minute long and includes a 5 minute warm up, 33 minute workout and 5 minute cool down. There is also a 12 minute instructional section explaining proper technique for pregnancy exercise.

Best Pregnancy Fitness DVD

COMPLETE PREGNANCY FITNESS
COMPLETE PREGNANCY FITNESS
This was my personal favorite pregnancy exercise DVD and I did it a lot especially during my second trimester. This DVD has both prenatal and postnatal workouts. The prenatal workout is about 40 minutes long and includes fat-burning cardio (again this is low impact but gets your heart rate up), muscle toning, strength training, and tension-relieving stretches. For me it was just the right length for a good exercise workout without overdoing it. It is more strength exercises then cardio (squats, lunges etc). But it does get your heart rate up and you feel like you're really working out. There is also a 20 minute partner workout - you need a willing boyfriend, husband or friend to do this workout with you. I didn't do it when I was pregnant as I lacked a willing partner, but felt the money for just the 1st workout was worth what I paid anyhow. There is also a 15 minute workout for after childbirth to help rehabilitate your back, abdominals, buttocks, inner thighs, and hips. There's also a set of gentle first stretches to guide you very beginning of your recovery up to one year postpartum

Tracey Anderson: The Pregnancy Project - New for 2013

Tracy Anderson: The Pregnancy Project
Tracy Anderson: The Pregnancy Project
I love Tracy Anderson workout DVDs. Unfortunately for me, this one wasn't released until March 2013 which was after I'd had my babies but if I was pregnant this would be at the top of my list. Tracy Anderson is trainer to Hollywood stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Courtney Cox, Christine Davis Molly Sims and more. Probably because her methods get results! It features nine fitness DVDs with a different fitness DVD for each month of your pregnancy. This is great as you change so much during your pregnancy from month to month - so you can really get the best from your workouts. She is pregnant while filming for the DVD so you go through your pregnancy with Tracy.

10 Minute Solution : Prenatal Pilates

10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates
10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates
10 minute solution DVDs are perfect for moms to be who are short on time. Everybody can find 10 minutes a day to do some exercise. This particular DVD features prenatal pilates. Pilates is the perfect exercise for pregnant women as it isn't too physically excerting but pilates helps maintain and improve the condition of both your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. I did pilates during both of my pregnancies and I also did this DVD during my second pregnancy. This was actually one of the DVDs I did the most because although I normally prefer cardio workouts on some days during my pregnancy I was so tired due to looking after my son and working, I just couldn't motivate myself to do a cardio workout. However, I could always motivate myself to do a 10 minute pilates workout. A great choice of pregnancy workout DVD. The version featured is the instant video on amazon but you can buy this on DVD too - see below.

Pregnancy Fitness Dvd: Body By Trimester - Released February 2012

Body By Trimester (2012)
Body By Trimester (2012)
What | really like is about this DVD is they focus on the muscles that get the most wear and tear during pregnancy, and pay extra special attention to the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. You will appreciate having focused on these muscle groups after you've had the baby. It is worth it to help you keep your tummy in the best shape possible - believe me! The DVD was released in 2012 and it's a great choice if you're looking for a workout that is tailored to each trimester. There are nine workouts in a 3 DVD set. Each trimester DVD includes two 30 minute interval training workouts, as well as a 15 minute express workout, all utilizing dumbbells and a stability ball. The 3rd trimester also includes special exercises to help you prepare for labor. Each DVD has a separate section on abdominal toning and how to check for diastasis recti (this is when the stomach muscles separate and can be the cause of the dreaded "mommy tummy).

Expecting More - Sara Haley's Daily Sweat Pregnancy Program (2 DVDs)
Expecting More - Sara Haley's Daily Sweat Pregnancy Program (2 DVDs)
This is a good choice women who is fit and healthy before her pregnancy. I like that there are lots of different options with this DVD. It includes lots of different workouts (6 in total) including strength training, cardio, dance, sports drills and weights. There's 230 minutes of excercise in total - so enough! You can make it more intense or take it easier depending on how you feel. It will work certain muscles as hard as you did before you were pregnant. t is filmed as the instructor (Sara Haley) is expecting her first child in 2011

What To Expect When You're Expecting (Workout 2012)

What To Expect When You're Expecting - Workout [DVD]
What To Expect When You're Expecting - Workout [DVD]
This is a good choice is you're short on time or find it hard to motivate yourself to exercise. It includes six 10 minute mix and match routines. This is good because it's easy to motivate yourself to do a 10 minute workout and once you've done one you can add others if you feel like it. Just remember 10 minutes working out beats 10 minutes on the sofa! Change your routine based upon your energy level or time available for that day. This is especially great for motivating yourself towards the end of your pregnancy when you feel the least like exercising. Released in 2012 this is one of the newest workout DVDs featured. You can buy this on amazon instant video as well as on DVD. Workouts include: 3 cardio 2 strength and 1 stretch & relax.

Prenatal yoga has so many benefits for pregnant women . It can ease the discomforts of pregnancy, such as moodiness, shortness of breath, swollen ankles, nausea, indigestion and insomnia; and help you prepare for the demands of labor. It also helps you workout without making you feel like you may be damaging your body or harming your baby. This is why you will see lots of pregnancy yoga dvds. The DVD has a 30 minute energising and strenthening workout which will help prepare for the demands of labor. The 2nd part is a 15 minutes relaxing and rejuvenating DVD.

Suzanne Bowen's Long and Lean Prenatal Workout

Suzanne Bowen's Long and Lean Prenatal Workout
I found this is another good workout which helps you "feel the burn" without putting stress on your body. Be warned - there are lots of squats in this one. A good plus point of this DVD is the stretching session at the end, it helps you feel rejuvenated at the end of the workout. Suzanne Bowen's long and lean Prenatal Workout features cardio, strength, and flexibility to help you stay fit during pregnancy. This workout offers three segments: 20 minutes standing work, 20 minutes mat work, and 10 minutes stretching with relaxation. A bonus postnatal Pilates mat workout focuses on strengthening and toning abs after baby.

Walking Workout DVDs During Pregnancy

When I was pregnant I used to do walking workout dvds. They aren't designed with pregnancy in mind and to be on the safe side, I would advise you to check with a medical professional before starting any exercise program. But, I found they are great low impact exercise especially when you get bigger. They are also great to do after you have had the baby to start getting back in shape.

Lesley Sansone does some great walking exercise dvds, with different distances. Check out one below.

There are literally tons of pregnancy workout DVDs far too many to mention in one article but if you're looking for a few more different choices here are some ideas.

I found that pregnancy is a good time to do new things and exercise routines you've never considered before. When I was pregnant I took up pilates. Why not try belly dancing with the DVD below?
