Best Yoga Articles

Updated on February 3, 2015

Struggling to find decent articles on Yoga? So was I until recently.

This is about my personal journey into the ways of Yoga. Why did I start looking, and what did I find? The self I wanted to become and the tools I needed to achieve the goal I have set myself seemed an impossibility. To get on my way, I turned to the internet. This is how it went.

Well this is nearly how it went as I had a couple of false starts over time. I had to learn a lot before I could totally give myself to the program. What program you may ask.? Well, life is a set of mind programs which I use to 'set' myself up for the day, or year, It depends on how long I need to reset my brain away from the daily grind.

Stress reduction in the mind, so affects the body that I have found the need to de-stress becoming a daily necessity.

Think how you feel and why. See what I found..

Starting Out

One cold rainy morning recently I was running late for work and leapt into the driving seat of my car. As I sat down I heard a heart rendering ripping sound. To my dismay I discovered that my trousers had burst their side seams. I hastily returned to my bedroom to change. Looking in the mirror I realised that I now had to do something positive about my growing weight.

I knew that I was now in a sedentary job sitting behind a desk all day long with little or no physical exercise in my daily routine. The stress level that I had been on because of my job had not helped, with me resorting to a lot of comfort food. Being on the wrong side of middle age this has started to take its toll on me. My local doctor confirmed my fears and we started to make a positive plan of action for me to improve my well being.

My diet was the first thing that undertook a makeover. But the crucial element of my new regime was the exercise. Although I had been walking every day, it had not been strenuous enough to do me much good. As a starter it was recommended that I started stretching exercises such as yoga. I was absolutely horrified. Surely this was nothing for a, sort of, maybe, middle-aged person to start doing?

After calming me down my doctor recommended that I start reading up on the subject to gain an insight into what yoga was about. It was clear to him that I was absolutely clueless. As has become usual I turned to the Internet to try and find the best yoga articles for me to read and make my mind up, before starting something which seemed to be so radical and not my idea of fun.

Unfortunately as is becoming more and more common on the Internet there is a lot of information out there which is misleading and is pure commercial hype to sell you something which you don't really need. Many articles did not seem to me to ring true on a purely common sense level. Also I was not comfortable with a lot of the suggestions that some of the sites were making!

This all changed when I was fortunate to find a site that is packed full of videos and articles which I feel a lot more comfortable with. The best yoga articles that I found are on a new site which seems to have everything I may need to get me started. There seems to be not too much of the hype or sales pitch which is a credit to the site.

The basics are discussed and shown in video which makes it a lot easier for me to see how to carry out the movements and hopefully reduce my stress and my weight. Although there is a commercial element in the website, I think that the free offerings available more than compensate for this.

Anybody who finds themselves in my position can do themselves no harm by taking a look at this site which has the best yoga articles.

Yoga for Computer Users: Postures to think about.

Being in an office situation, I find it difficult to sit for long periods of time. The added burden of having a computer to tap away at all day, gives me little excuse to get up and stroll around the office as much as I would like. However, I came across these great postures which I feel are great to relieve the problems I have had.

The Diamond Posture (Vajrasana)

Kneel on a thick carpet or blanket with your knees close together. Sit back on your heels and stretch up from your hips, balancing your head well so that a line drawn through ear, shoulder, elbow and hip would be straight. You should sit up in this posture for greatest benefits.

The Locust (Salabhasana)

Most yoga students are familiar with this posture. Lie flat, face down, chin on floor. Make your hands into fists and push them either under your thighs to help the lift, or place them alongside your body. Exhale and lift legs from your hips, tightening your buttocks and stretching your legs up and back. Hold position for as long as possible, exhale, return to starting posture and repeat.

The Dog Stretch (Adho mukha svanasana)

Lie face down, legs stretched back, buttocks tightened and knees pulled back. Place hands just below shoulders, exhale and lift head, then chest, shoulders and torso, pushing down from your pelvis and straightening your arms. From the back of your head to your tailbone, your body should be curved back. Push shoulders back and down. Push head back more. Stay like this as long as possible with normal breathing. Come down very slowly, and relax.

The Twist (Bhardwajasana)

Kneel on the floor and sit back, bringing both feet to the right of your hips. Straighten your right arm, bring it across your body and turn to the left. Place your hand, palm down under your left knee. Exhale, turn your body more to the left and clasp your right elbow with your left hand, from the back. Turn your head and gaze over your right shoulder. Fold position for a few breaths and then twist and look back over your left shoulder. Shoulders should be at right angles to the body. Come back to starting position and repeat on other side. You should do this posture once every hour if you have lower back pain.
