dieting to avoid diabetics/ diabetes is a good preventive measure

Dieting can help us avoid diabetics that usually come with old age. I am not saying that it is only old people that suffer from the sickness but, it is more common in old people. In this hub are some kinds of food that helps reduce ones chance of being diabetic in the long run. Also in this hub is some class of food that needs to be avoided in order to lead a diabetes free life. The information in this hub may not be for you depending on your geographical location. Please do bear with me.

FOODS TO EAT

Plantain

Plantain can be prepared in different form. Plantain when processed can produce a good number of wonderful meals. Roast it, ok. Mill it good. Boil it you are fine. A person that takes more of plantain cannot suffer from diabetics of any kind. Apart from not standing the chance of having diabetics, the person will be healthy and strong as plantain (unripe) contains IRON. Observe Cameroonians and see how physically strong they are. This is partly because they eat a lot of plantain.

Beans

Beans are one of the major sources of protein that we have. Regular intake of beans helps in rapid growth without negative side effect. Young people that eat more of beans will look fresh, big, healthy and mentally sharp. The only problem with beans is that when not well cooked, it can cause stomach upset which may lead to flatulence. In as much as there are other good ways to cook beans, one of the best ways to prepare beans is to parboil it and then soak it overnight before cooking. This will help eliminate all the gas in it that can cause flatulence.

Vegetable and Fruits

Adequate and regular intake of vegetables and fruits is a good way of living a healthy life and keeping distant from diabetes of late life. There are times when I replace my meal with fruits. I do this at least twice in a week and one good about replacing your meal with fruits is that it is cheaper than getting the actual cooked food. So, you are bettering your life in two ways (financial wise and health wise)

Irish potatoes

A lot of people don’t know that Irish potatoes is a very good source of protein that helps build the body and keep one free from avoidable diseases and sicknesses. You can boil it and eat with red oil (palm oil) or however you like it.

Wheat meal and Semovita

Wheat meal and Semovita contains low level of carbohydrate and cannot expose one to the danger of having diabetics. These are two kinds of food that serves dual purpose for those that engage in hard labour: holding your strength and saving you from taking in too much starchy and carbohydrate food.

Foods that needs to be taken in small quantity

Cassava

Cassava no doubt represents over 40% of foods taken in Nigeria. You can pound it as FUFU, you can process it into Garri, you can make ABACHA (what you get when you boil the cassava tube and then slice it) out of it, etc. A lot of people in Nigeria have this believe that they cannot be satisfied if they don’t take cassava or its by-product for some period of time. They tend to forget that too much intake of cassava and its by-product is a sure fire way of signing a binding contract with diabetics.

Yam

In as much as yam is a respected food in Nigeria, too much of it may cause one to develop diabetes in old age or earlier depending on ones body mechanics.

Garri

Garri is a processed cassava, avoid taking it too much.

Corn/ maize

Maize is another food in the family of carbohydrate and starchy foods. Be moderate with its intake and you will have no scores to settle with diabetes.

Alcoholic drink

Though alcohol is good for the body but the ones that are contained in other starchy foods that we eat is more than enough for our body to function just fine. There is no point taking additional alcoholic drink. Too much of alcoholic drink will not only give you visa to the land of diabetes but will also make you prone to having kidney problem. If you must take it, be moderate.

Fatty food

Fatty food is the principal cause of type 2 diabetes which has its root in obesity. Two things that too much fatty food will do for you are to bring you: diabetics and heart disease. Though our body need it but not too much.

Beverages that contains too much sugar

I particularly have problem with the beverages produced in Nigeria. The so-called Minerals are nothing more than excess sugar and water. I would not want to mention names here but those affected already knows. People should stop taking minerals as they are poisonous to our system. I rather take KUNU or ZOBO than take minerals. KUNU and ZOBO are Nigerian native drinks.

      Very interesting information. But I have high level of uric acid and most of those kind of food are really high in uric acid.

      Am so glad to read your write up on diabetic in Nigeria, as a nurse practising in Australia, l know how much resouces are in place for both preventive and treatment of this disease. Haven been to Nigeria early this year for few weeks, l must say that am very scared for the lives of people living there. Obesity and bad life style has become trendy(Living like the white as they say) without any planning on the ground to deal with these issues that not only come with age but also with life style.

      Hubs like this shoulb be advocated for all to access always for awareness sake.

      Diet and nutrition is important of course, but research will show you what Glutathione can do for many diseases. A lot of diseases are genetically passed down too through damaged DNA
