Ear Candling; Origin, Benefit, Instruction
Ear Candling originated thousands of years ago in Greece then spread to many ancient civilizations. It's primary use was for healing and spiritual purification. The success of Ear Candling quickly spread to China and today it is used world wide.
Ear Candling is a natural alternative to ear care compared to chemical solutions and other methods. The procedure helps children, adults and seniors of all ages release ear wax, toxins and debris from the ear canal.
The ear candle is commonly made of one hundred percent unbleached muslin and bees wax mixed with essential oils and herbal extracts such as lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree or sweet almond oil and aide to soothe the ear canal nerve endings. The warm smoke and vacuum of the burning candle create a process to cleanse, heal and promote a deep relaxation. Candling helps reduce the pressure on the nerve endings to soothe allergies and aide in the fullness of breath.
My experience and the benefits of Ear Candling
It was my experience that a fellow hair stylist mentioned she thought I could use an ear candling over 20 years ago, because I spoke loud. Imagine that? Me loud. Well, it made perfect sense. If there is a build up of ear wax then hearing loss to a degree is obvious. Some more then others. Most times the talker does not realize they are speaking loud. I did not. I just said excuse me allot, thinking the person was not talking clear, well not so. Anyway my friend ear candled my ears and the results were remarkable. I spoke much softer, my balance was improved and I felt all around, better. It is amazing how much our inner ear plays a role in our all around well being and health.
I thought my clients would benefit from the service so I set up a station at the Salon and added Ear Candling. I have candled over 150 sets of ears and all have had improvement. I have done ear candling on construction workers because they get allot of debit in the ear from the job. I have done small children that have had ear aches and were in allot of pain. In moments when done the ear ache was gone. Back when; the olden days, cigar smoke was used to blow into the ears of hurting children to help soothe the nerve endings and relieve their ear ache. I have also done ear candling to help relieve sinus pressure and headaches and to help with balance and dizziness issues. I no longer have the space so I have stopped the service at the Salon. My husband David ear candles my ears and if he can most anyone can. JK. I trained him well.

The procedure is simple. There is absolutely no discomfort on the person receiving the ear candling. In most cases one candle per ear is sufficient per person. If there are still present symptoms after one candle, up to two candles can be used per ear. The most I have used on an elderly lady with hearing loss, per wax build up was one and one half candles per ear. I recommend follow up procedure four times per year.
Ear Candles can be purchased in a Health Food Store, public Beauty Supply or online. It is best to purchase the more expensive ear candle. You can physically see the difference. The more expensive candle, the muslin is wrapped much tighter to form the cone. This ear candle burns allot slower, removing more wax. The cost is about $6.00 per candle. My favorite ear candle is Wally's. I purchase the ear candles with lavender oils. The scent is nice while doing the procedure and relaxes not only the person getting the procedure but me as well. Do not worry, I do watch the flame. JK.
The procedure takes about 10 minutes per ear, per candle. Moving on we will go to the instructions.
Ear Candling Technique
Items and Instructions
Do not let the flame part freak you out. Ear Candling is safe as long as you practice safety and follow instructions. It is really a 'walk in the park'. You are in control. So, not to worry.
Two Ear Candles-Two Paper Plates- Flat pillow or similar-Three Hand Towels-Sharp Scissors-Container of Water-Lighter or Matches-Cotton Swabs-Ear Oil (may use sweet almond oil, eucalyptus or similar)
Make an opening in the plate( off center) large enough for the tip of the candle. Place the tip of the ear candle into the small hole. Set aside.
Place the utensils; scissors, water, cotton, oil on a towel about an arms length from where you will be working.
Wrap a hand towel around the persons hair. Have them lie down or sit and place head on flat pillow. They need to be almost flat. Place a towel over the shoulders of the person for protection. (Clothing, upper body, hair)
Place the small end, the tip of candle into the ear canal. Do not push it in. Keep the candle slightly tilt.
Light the large end of the candle. The warm smoke takes a minute to get to the ear lobe.
When the flame burns about two inches down, then pick up the scissors and cut at the lowest part of the ash. The scissors will catch the ash, then toss the ash into the bowl of water.
Continue watching the flame. Repeat step above.
The person will hear a crackling noise about 1/2" to 3/4" of candle use. This is ear wax breaking up.
When the candle gets to about two inches above the plate remove using the scissors and place the candle in the water. Then set the candle on the paper plate.
Use a cotton swab, tear off a small amount and apply a small amount of ear oil. (Sweet almond oil, eucalyptus's, or the likes may be used) The oil relieves any dryness or itching.
Repeat the procedure on the next ear start using a new plate.
Within minutes the person should feel relief of the symptom. Sometimes it does take longer.
You can use another candle per ear, as needed.
You can pick up the candle and cut it open. Wear rubber gloves. You will see the ear wax the warm smoke pulled out of the ear canal. There is usually a finger tip or more of ear wax.
Congratulations. I do hope that someone feels allot better and or hears allot better. With practice the procedure gets better as with all things.
