Why are SO many people, even in 2012, still so very ignorant about cognitive disabilities?

There are a lot of people out there still, who either have antiquated notions of some disabilities that have a long and public history, or know little to nothing of those that have been "discovered" more recently (isolated, studied, identified and named), if they have even heard of them.  What's worse, many educated people, even those who work in relevant fields such as education (and even special education!!!) who are as ignorant and stubbornly judgmental as Archie Bunker on a *bad* day!  I just don't get it.

Because awareness isn't out there. No one knows how to prevent Alzheimers in the common society because they don't need to know until it is too late for a family member. Years before, the individuals Alzheimers could have been prevented if he had the knowledge. It's maddening!
