Can Tooth Bacteria affect your health if left untreated?

Is it possible that mood, fatigue and a feeling of unwellness can be the result of bacteria in the mouth, solved by professional cleaning?  I recently have had some deep cleaning at a clinic offered by a college here.  I have noticed improved energy and a feeling of wellness and clarity.

I remember reading some article that said, most elderly people who took care of their teeth suffered from less illnesses as their counterparts that didn't take care of their teeth. I believe that it was because the people who brushed their teeth were more aware about health problems and how to stop them more so than the ones who didn't. I'm not sure if this helps!
