Here are 10 Crucial Steps to Stop Constipation if your constipation is caused from poor eating habits. As I always recommend, please see your doctor if your constipation is caused from medical issues, or you have special medical needs that may prevent you from following the Constipation Cures that work for me.
To help prevent constipation and even weight gain while traveling. I recommend taking a medium size cooler along with you. You can usually find ice free at hotels or buy it at gas stations. I take a few Ziploc bags along and fill them with ice. This makes it very convenient to fill. You can even put the water filled bags in your friends and families freezer for the next day's drive.
I went on a long 4000 mile driving trip with my husband, stopping in to visit friends and family along the way. Because I didn't follow my own advice by taking a decent size cooler on the trip, I did have more trouble with constipation and I gained weight too. When I have healthy food with me, I eat healthier. When I don't, I tend to eat poorly.

This is one of my Best Constipation Remedies for Adults because you can eat 2 Servings of Fruit and throw in a bunch of Spinach too in just One Vegetable and Fruit Smoothie Recipe. Juice Plus is a TREMENDOUS help for me to stop constipation because it has 8 grams of Fiber, so I don't even need to add psyllium fiber to my shakes anymore and on top of that I get 13 grams of a healthy Protein that does not constipate me like other protein powders do.
- Gluten Free Diet Plan. Gluten could be one of the causes of constipation, if you are Sensitive to Gluten.

Smoothies play a very big part in my natural remedy for constipation. Fruit naturally helps prevent constipation and it is so easy to pack in extra fiber and even hide vegetable to reduce the calorie intake and increase the health benefits of smoothies.
When I don't have my daily smoothie, I can tell. Now that I found the Juice Plus Complete Shake Mix (see product links and information below), my smoothies are even more effective for me and more delicious then ever.

Do you suffer from Gluten Constipation?
If you have a Gluten Sensitivity or Gluten Intolerance, it is possible that your constipation is caused by Gluten. Gluten is probably more known for causing diarrhea in people with Celiac's Disease, but in some it can cause Gluten Constipation.
Most people are familiar with Gluten found in breads and flour products but it is also in foods you would not have thought of such as Sauces, Prepared Foods, Seasonings etc... If you are able and your doctor approves, try eliminating Gluten entirely from your diet to see if you are suffering from Gluten Constipation or if you have a sensitivity or intolerance to Gluten. If you don't feel that Gluten was the problem, you can try adding it back into your diet slowly keep track of your bowel movements and how you feel.
See if Gluten causes you to become more tired, as it does me. My friend gets joint pain after he eats Gluten. The problems caused by Gluten Sensitivity or Gluten Intolerance may not even show up for a few days or so. I went on a totally Gluten Free Diet for months. I then slowly added gluten back into my diet to see the difference in my bowel movements or how I feel. Write it down because you may need to compare days or weeks. Did you develop any unknown rashes when you eat Gluten. Remember, it could takes a few days or some people react to gluten much, much quicker. (Many people with Celiac's Disease suffer from Diarrhea.
Eating Gluten Free can be a bit challenging. First, like me, you might be addicted to Carbohydrates with lots of Gluten. Second, it can take a little time to find out if certain foods contain gluten or not. I took the easier way and just ate many of the same foods over and over again. I ate lots and lots of fruits and veggies because I didn't have to look it up on the computer to see if it contained Gluten. I found out that some baked beans I liked and was able to digest well, also didn't contain Gluten by calling up the company (or look online at the companies website).
Gluten is most known to be found in bread and flour, but did you know that some seasonings, sauces, prepared foods and many other foods also contain gluten? Try eliminating ALL Gluten from your diet for a month or more to see if you are suffering from gluten constipation or have a sensitivity or intolerance to gluten. If you don't feel gluten is the culprit, try adding it back into your diet slowly and keep track on paper how you feel, your bowel movements or any rashes you may develop. If you think gluten is causing any problems in your life, you may want to contact your doctor to test you for wheat allergies or gluten allergies or sensitivities.
You can benefit from a Gluten Free Diet even if you don't have Celiac's Disease and it just might be one of your best Constipation Cures. Try it to find out.

# 4 Can Protein Shakes Make You Constipated?

Even a few bites of chicken or GMO (Genetically Modified Soy Protein) constipated me terribly especially in Wisconsin's winter months because I have SAD Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder. For some reason I was able to handle Beans (Black Beans, Garbanzo Beans, Even Bushes Baked Beans). Beans are a fantastic form of Protein and Fiber.
Some of the Side Effects of Protein Shakes can be Constipation. I found out that I was not able to digest GMO Genetically Modifyed Organism Soybean Protein. I had to totally cut out all of my protein shake powder and slowly add a very small amount back in. Studies are ongoing regarding the safety of GMO Soy Protein. It is scary to think of what GMO is doing to our food and what effects it has on our bodies.
Protein Powder Constipation is all too common and is preventable in many cases by choosing a healthier protein shake mix. # 5 Drink Half Your Body Weight in Ounces of Water per Day

So many people forget to drink water to stop constipation. Drinking the smoothies and plenty of water were and are extremely helpful as an easy and natural constipation relief remedy.
Typically you should drink Half your Body Weight in Ounces of Water Daily and Especially when you are constipated, try Drinking Half Your Body Weight + 10 ounces of Water. Someone at a health food store recommended that to me. He suggested that typically, I should drink Half my body weight in ounces of water but when I am constipated, add another 10 ounces to that. I came up with my Tasty Water Hints to get myself to drink more liquids.
Drink a Fruit Smoothie Everyday. Sneaky Spinach Strawberry Mango Smoothie (you won't taste the spinach) is Delicious!!!
This is HUGE. You can HIDE beautiful Fiber in this and never even know it is there or if you put the Juice Plus Complete Shake Mix in your smoothies, you won't need to add the extra fiber because Juice Plus protein shake has 8 grams of fiber so I stopped adding the extra psyllium fiber to my smoothies.

I can tell if don't drink my daily smoothie, so I try to drink one for Lunch each day. You can have it for Breakfast, Lunch or Mid Afternoon or Evening snack as a dessert. I make my smoothie either in my handy Magic Bullet. The latest and greatest Nutri Bullet.
About Fiber - Psyllium Fiber vs Inulin Fiber. I have an article going into more detail on this at but here is a quick comparison for you to help decide which Fiber to use.
As I mentioned above, drinking (or eating) my Juice Plus Smoothie gives me so much great fiber that I no longer need to add the extra fiber .If you don't have this protein shake mix, try adding Coarse Psyllium Fiber in your Fruit Smoothies. Others would enjoy the Smooth Textured Psyllium Fiber such as Metamucil. I do however advise to stay away from the aspartame sweetened or artificial sweetener fibers. Look on the Labels. Often the flavored Fibers have artificial Sweeteners in them.
You can use Psyllium Fiber
in many, many dishes without even knowing it is there. People love my healthy banana bread and I hide all sorts of fiber in there including Flaxseed. You can add it to Soup, Stews, Salads etc.... along with Flaxseed, ground or whole. It is ideal to freshly grind your whole flax seed.
I like to keep Inulin Fiber around mostly for my Liquids because it is virtually undetectable. You can use this in many recipes as well. It doesn't have to be liquid. If you would like to use it in really cold liquids as I do, I recommend putting a couple of tablespoons of warm water in your glass or bottle, then add your fiber, shake or stir and add your liquids of choice.
Start out with only 1/2 teaspoon when you are first adding fiber to your diet. See how your body reacts. Your body needs to SLOWLY become accustomed to fiber. Eventually you may end up adding up to 2 Tablespoons to your smoothies or dishes but start out slow or you may get diarrhea and I don't want you to become discouraged.
# 5 Drink Lots of Water
Most suggest drinking 64 ounces of water per day and others will recommend 1/2 your body weight in ounces and possibly plus 10 ounces over that for constipation treatments. Example: If you weigh 150 pounds, you would drink 75 to 85 ounces of water every single day. That may seem like too much to conquer but if these suggestion are constipation remedies, wouldn't you be willing to get constipation relief by getting your body accustom to drinking lots of fluid?
In a Half Gallon Pitcher or Jug, Mix:
3/4 Cup Orange Juice
1/4 Cup Concentrated Lemon Juice or 1 to 2 Lemons - Squeeze the Juice and Pulp right in (to taste)
16 Drops of Stevia
4 TBS (slowly work up to 16 TBS of Clear Inulin Fiber)
Add Honey, Sugar or Agave to Taste, if you must.
Fill to the top with Water
In a 16 ounce water bottle,
add 2 or 3 ounces of orange juice or grape juice.
You can also add 1/2 to 1 Full package of Emergen-C for added flavor and vitamins.

We all know that Exercising is great for our bodies to build strong bodies and minds and help strengthen our heart and promote circulation but did you ever think about Exercising to Stop Constipation. I didn't. I just didn't think about it.

This is a health tip I learned about a decade ago and it really helps but you may not like eating this way.
When you eat Protein and Carbohydrates together, like that of a typical American Meal, it produces a lot more gas in your system. Did I do much research on this, no. Does it help? Yes. It makes a huge difference in one of my family members digestive tract.
When you first start introducing Gas producing type vegetables you may see an up swing in gas in your digestive tract but once you slowly get your body used to eating these healthy veggies, the occurrence is less and less.
Helpful Tips to Avoid Excessive Gas and Bloating after Eating:
Start incorporating more Green, Red, Orange etc... veggies in your diet and less simple carbohydrates. Give your body the chance to get used to Broccoli, Brussel Sprout, Cabbage, Cauliflower type vegetables. You may be more gassy at first but this should subside when combined with the second tip.
Try eating a meal with 2 Servings of non Starchy vegetables and 1 serving of a lean Protein. Eliminate eating the carbohydrate when eating the protein. You may notice a difference.

- 8 Ounces White Rice Vinegar for milder taste (be creative with different vinegars)
- 2 TBS Stoneground Dijon Mustard (I love the really seedy mustards with this)

What we fuel our bodies with can effect your happiness, according to the new study by the National Bureau of Economic Reseach, eating more fruits and vegetables can make people happier. They found a link between the consumption of fruit and vegetables with the existence of high well being." They selected approxiately 80,000 randomly chosen British people documenting 7 various measurements of well being including: Feeling Low, GHQ Mental Disorders, Satisfaction with their Life, WEMWBS Mental Well Being, Self reported health, Feeling Low, Nevousness and Happiness.
The Study found that a persons Mental Well Being and Health rise according to the number of fruits and vegetables consumed per day, peaking with the consumption of 7 servings of Fruits and Vegetables per day. Large number of Demographics, Economic and Social Variables were used.
Can consuming more fruits and vegetables make you happier. Try it and see if it helps you. It should certainly help you cut back on eating so many carbohydrates and fats as it does for me.

The worst constipation of my life was Bentonite Constipation. Be VERY CAREFUL if you are taking Bentonite Clay as Bentonite Clay Constipation is truly horrible. I was taking in a pill form but it was not labeled as such, therefore I did not know to be extra careful. Read below about my Bentonite Clay Constipation.
