Superfood List

Updated on September 13, 2013

Why Superfoods?

The world has become so dependent on different pills and chemical supplements it sometimes forgets the organic aids that nature provides us. Taking the small steps to add some of these natural super green foods can greatly increase your health and comfort in the future. It is always a good thing to remember the more nutrients your body wants & receives, the better it runs.

Why Are Superfoods Called...well - Superfoods?

Super foods are great for the body. The reason they are referred to as superfoods is the simple fact that they do not just have one thing they are helpful towards. They generally help your body in multiple ways by giving it the nutrients it needs to operate at full capacity. Many foods will contain some of the substances needed to boost your energy, help build up your immune system, regulate your digestive system or even promote weight loss.

So here is a list of the most popular superfoods:

PS you can find more info on superfoods here:

PPS and there is another even longer list of superfood on the same website:

Fiber And Blood Sugar Control

One of the best super foods to add to your diet is beans. Beans can help maintain a healthy blood sugar level. They provide needed dietary fiber and protein without having the added fat that none of us really need. The best part about beans is there is such a wide range of types and flavors. Next time you our out to your favorite Mexican restaurant maybe add the black beans to your taco salad or the pinto beans to your burrito and guacamole. Enjoy a bowl of navy beans your body will thank you later.

Help With Digestive Problems

Beans are not the only multi-functional super food that would be good to add to your diet. Yogurt should not be ignored. Not only does it have calcium to help fight against osteoporosis, but it also contains magnesium with helps absorb the calcium so that your bones get the full effect. Besides all the beneficial calcium your bones will receive your stomach will thank you as well. Yogurt also contains probiotics that can help regulate your digestive problems.

Supplements Made Out Of Superfoods

There are some supplements that you can buy and are made out of superfoods.

Rich In Fiber

Yogurt is not the only food that can help with digestion; broccoli is another super green food. Broccoli encourages the digestive system and can actually aid in weight loss. It is also an excellent source of fiber as well. Like almost all green vegetables it helps your body be the happiest body it can be and affects your heart in the same way.

Salmon and other fish are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids

Proteins And Fatty Acids

Do not forget to add some meat into your diet. Salmon is an excellent addition without all the extra fat that many other meats carry. Salmon has the protein to help boost your energy and the fatty acids (check out the omega3 health benefits) that help give your skin that glowing effect. Salmon is often used for the production of fish oil which has sooo many positive effects on your health. But if you are a vegetarian and don't want to eat meat - there are still ways and foods that help you get those fatty acids and omega3 into your body. Try these alternatives

Books On Superfoods

Here is a list of books that deal with superfoods. Listing almost all known superfoods together with their effects on our bodies and recipes that will teach you how to prepare them.

Dark chocolate is also a super food

Dark Chocolate

Happy And Relaxed

Not everything is about meat and vegetables; you can even add a little chocolate into your diet, dark chocolate that is. Endorphins are released when they receive the little boost of caffeine you receive from chocolate. This in turn improves your mood, and can relax you some when stressed. It is a lot easier to get work done when you are happier and your concentration improves.

Packed with nutrients

Green seems to be the theme with nutrient dense foods. Avocados are also an excellent source of fiber. They contain good cholesterol promoting nutrients and do not ignore the fact that they are an excellent source of potassium and magnesium as well. A great, tasty and healthy way to eat avocados is guacamole.

If you want to learn how to make guacamole check this site:!

More Antioxidants

Again, not everything has to be about the food. Green Tea is an excellent source of anti-oxidants. It also creates its own form of caffeine that will give that same boost chocolate does. It is also believed to encourage weight loss. People tend to lose more weight on their diet if green tea is included versus people who do the same diet, but do not include green tea.

Lots of useful info and even a tee quality guide for dummies:

Antioxidant powerhouse

The superfood list would not be complete without one fruit. There are quite a few fruits that can be called superfoods but I have chosen blueberries because I like them best. What is great about eating fruits is the fact that they can be eaten raw or turned into a fruit juice. No need for cooking and wasting time.

So, Why Blueberries?

Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants that help remove free radicals from our bodies. Then they help stop inflammations in our bodies (intestines, joints and even skin) and because of various nutrients and acids they contain they also prevent certain forms of cancer. Next - they protect our eyes and prevent macular degeneration which is related to our aging. Blueberries also improve brain function especially memory - they can help with Alzheimer's disease. And at the end of the list - blueberries also contain pterostilbene which is similar to resveratrol. Resveratrol is produced natural by certain plants and helps them fight fungi and bacteria. It has similar benefits to us when we eat blueberries and/or grapes. These are the only fruits that contain this nutrient.

Mother Of All Grains

Quinoa is is one of the best whole grains you can eat. It is even called the mother of all grains. It is an ancient grain that was used a lot in the past but then forgotten. Recently it was rediscovered and is already available in many supermarkets. Why is it so good?

It's high in protein (8 grams in 1 cup cooked),

fiber (5 grams per cup)

good source of iron.

has plenty of zinc,

vitamin E,

and selenium.

All these can help you with weight loss and weight control. It is also very beneficial to your heart and can help with diabetes.

Superfoods Are Not The Ultimate Answer

Keep Your Meals Balanced And Live Healthy

While it is very important to try and include as many of the super foods in your diet as possible, remember to try and keep your meals in balance with other fruits and vegetables as well.

Therefore do not go to the fast food chains and have a burger and fries for lunch and dinner just because you had some yogurt at breakfast. Keep your meals balanced, and whenever possible choose healthy.

Superfoods Are Not A Miracle Cure

Just because these superfoods are packed with the nutrients your body needs they will no cancel out an entire day of misbehaving. Try to keep a healthy diet AND include superfoods in your meals.

Yes- spinach! Not just because of Popeye, but because it has a really good amount of iron, which is great for vegetarians. Swiss chard is similar (though don't know if it has as much iron) know, all those dark, leafy greens!

      Great list- thanks!

Wild Salmon all the way!! :) Farmed has quite a bit of fat. With the ocean's vastness and how much they travel in the 2-4yrs they are out in the open ocean, it can't compare to farmed. Besides, it's pretty awesome to think the fish I'm eating lived a completely AWESOME life!
