The Science of Service: How It Benefits Communities and Individuals

As Helen Keller said, “The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.”

In today’s era, where self-care and individual success have become everyone’s priority, giving back to society may seem secondary. However, you might be surprised to learn that one act of kindness also has unlimited benefits.

According to past research studies, engaging in any act of kindness triggers the neurotransmitters in the brain, releasing hormones that make you happy. Hormones like dopamine and oxytocin create happiness and strengthen our social connections. These neurochemicals have a positive impact on mental and physical health. Scientific studies show that giving improves a person’s overall health.

Giving back to society is an age-old tradition. Lord Buddha has spoken extensively about its benefits. He says, “Generosity brings happiness at every stage of its expression.” His teachings emphasise that both the giver and receiver benefit mutually.

Now, let us explore how volunteering activities benefit communities and individuals.

Mental Well Being

Stress, anxiety, and depression have become common in most of our lives. Research shows that people participating in volunteering activities for social causes seem to manage stress better. There are psychological and emotional benefits observed in people. Sometimes people find their purpose in life and dedicate their whole life to working for mankind. They achieve a sense of mental satisfaction and thus give joy. The joy of giving is bigger than any other joy in life.

One day, I saw some school kids helping a child on the streets with food, books, and clothes. After they left, each kid had a smile on their face. Our future lies in the hands of these kids. So, young adults must understand the importance and value of giving back to society.

Social Impact

Any act of kindness impacts not only society but also our social communities. When one individual helps selflessly, it encourages others to follow the same path. Some social initiatives contribute to sustainable development. Corporate giants engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to promote the growth of society, the economy, and the environment in the long run.

The renowned humanitarian and spiritual leader Sri Madhusudan Sai, through his global mission, aims to provide free healthcare, education, and nutrition to people in need. The mission operates in over 80 countries, transforming lives through selfless service for all and attaining true happiness.

Strengthening Bonds

Giving back to society in any form helps build trust and strengthen bonds with communities. As people come forward to volunteer together, they unite around a common cause. This increases community engagement and cultivates a positive spirit. It also helps break down stereotypes and build connections with individuals. Volunteering activities encourage network building. I have participated in a few such activities during my college. The whole program gave me an idea of social campaigning, talking to people confidently, and making connections.

Improving Physical Health

Although it might feel that there is no direct connection between volunteering and physical health, volunteering can improve physical health. According to studies, regular volunteering helps to improve your heart health and makes your immune system stronger. People who are engaged in field work have better fitness levels. Significant health improvements have been observed in people, such as reduced blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels.

My uncle is 65 years old and a member of a morning walkers’ group where they participate in social activities for the environment. Every month, the group plants about hundred trees to save the environment. This one activity has made my uncle’s lifestyle active and healthy. He feels he is close to nature as well.

Making You More Responsible

Today’s young adults actively participate in volunteering activities. Early age instills decision-making and builds leadership qualities. Their actions impact the community. Hence, they learn to think and make decisions with greater responsibility. One becomes responsible for their actions individually and for society.

Making You More Empathetic

As volunteers come across different life situations, engaging in an act of kindness makes them more empathetic. They cultivate a feeling of compassion as they connect with others at a deeper emotional level. One also builds emotional and human connections over time.

The Feel-Good Factor

When you do good to others, you too feel good. Giving back to society is a selfless gesture that brings immense joy. According to studies, showing generosity creates a happy and pleasurable feeling inside the mind. Doing something for others spreads love, happiness, and kindness in society. A small act of kindness can also make you feel happy.

I remember that during the summers, when returning from school every day, my dad used to give fruit juice to some children. These kids were always playing in the sun and waiting for their parents, who worked as laborers at the nearby construction site. It made me realise that small gestures can also bring smile on someone’s face.

According to scientific research, giving back to society is a path to improved well-being. Helping your community is an enriching feeling that no one can take away from you for your entire life. It will always have a special place in your life journey. The power of giving back to society is huge. One can donate monetarily or volunteer physically to help society. In today’s era, many philanthropists and activists are working hard for the upliftment of the underserved people. Any contribution to the community makes both the giver and the receiver happy. So, try to be generous and kind to those in need!
